Subject: The Differences Of A Classic vs. An Anthem
Written By: Hairspray on 01/20/02 at 03:50 a.m.
What exactly, in your opinion, makes some songs classics and some songs anthems?
List examples if you wish! ;)
IMO, classics are those that are enduring for their enjoyment and entertainment value; Whereas anthems have that and an added embrasement from people (at a bit of a greater scale) because of a common cause or message.
My examples:
Classic - Boston's "More Than A feeling"
Anthem - "Born In The U.S.A."

I have always thought of classics as songs which, IMO, will always bring back either the best or worst of memories and are not forgotten (also which, no matter how some may try, will not be "outdone" by a cover of it). The word "anthem", to me, symbolizes a song in which the content makes you take pride (generally patriotic in nature). Therefore, I include the following examples:
Classic: "Come Sail Away" Styx and, from way back, "Unforgettable" Nat King Cole
Anthem: "Proud to Be An American" Lee Greenwood and "What a Wonderful World"

Classic "Renegade" by Styx (one of my all time favorite songs)
"Bohemian Rhapsody" Queen
Anthem "United" by Judas Priest
"We Will Rock You" Queen

Classic: "Hotel California" by The Eagles
Anthem: "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister
I think classics are those songs which, no matter how long agao they were created, are just as popular today, and embraced by the newer generations as if they were their ownn. They are literaly timeless and universally known.
Anthems are songs which each particular generation can identify with, and claim as thier own individually. The above are, IMO, perfect examples.

To me, a classic is a song which can stand the test of time, and remain popular (or at least relevant) in any decade. Sometimes this happens because the lyrics are powerful, sometimes just because the song has a great sound, or a good beat. Usually, it's the whole package.
Anything I've ever thought of as an anthem has taken on some personal meaning; sorta like it has become the theme song to a certain event or stage in my life.
