Subject: Same Name, Different Song
It occurred to me recently that there are a few songs from the 80s that share a common name but are completely different songs.
For example: Both Madonna and The Eurythmics recorded different songs with the title "Who's That Girl?".
Also, The Escape Club and Kool Moe Dee had songs called "Wild, Wild West".
I know that you guys can think of other examples! ;)

How about 'Absolute beginners' by The Jam and also David Bowie?
Subject: Re: Same Name, Different Song
As soon as i hit post, i thought of another couple, Madonna and Kool and the Gang - both sang a different song by the name of 'Cherish' and George Michael ( ok - its 1990 - just slightly out!) and Wham with 'freedom'.
Also, even though its N/A to 80's songs, but is for the 90's - Gabrielle and Kylie Minogue both sang 'Give me just a little more time'.

OK, here are some of mine:
Cheap Trick--Don't Be Cruel (remake of Elvis Presley song)
Bobby Brown--Don't Be Cruel (not the Elvis Presley song)
Other songs that were done in the 1980's that had the same title as songs done in earlier decades but were different songs altogether:
Tone Loc--Wild Thing (not the Troggs song from 1966)
Gloria Estefan--1-2-3 (not the Len Barry song from 1965)
Aerosmith--Rag Doll (not the 4 Seasons song from 1964)

The Power of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood
The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News

There was also "Angel," by Throwing Muses. BTW, are we sticking entirely with songs made in the '80's here?
Subject: Re: Same Name, Different Song
Shaggy just had a song called "Angel", too. Also, Celine Dion did a song called "The Power Of Love" a few years ago.

Isn't Shaggy's "Angel" a remake of the 80s song "Angel of the Morning"? (I don't think it had the exact same lyrics)
Subject: Re: Same Name, Different Song
Allegedly, Angel is NOT a remake of Angel Of The Morning. I have heard both tracks, and although I did believe it too, to begin with, I thought that if he'd mess up a sampling like Angel Of The Morning, it can't be sampled. You can't sing the song in a reggae style... or, for that matter, consider that a direct lift of the tune.
However, as a matter of interest, "Angel" by Shaggy, was written by Curtis, Ertegun, Miller and Taylor, and "Angel Of The Morning" was written by Taylor. Maybe that writer has been specified as the one that has had the tune and music sampled from one to the other.

Are both songs supposed to be in the 80's? I have one from the 50's and one from the 80's. Buddy Holly and Transvision Vamp both sang different songs called, 'Baby I Don't Care'.
Subject: Re: Same Name, Different Song
"Open Your heart" was recorded by Madonna, which was already the title of a Europe classic, and "Lyin' Eyes" is the same title shared by both Europe and the Eagles.

In Punk Rock, You wouldn't believe how many bands have done a song called Punk Song or Punk Rock Song. And there's also a tendency to do a self-titled song too. :-/
On the subject of plagiarism, how about a topic called Same Song, Different Name? ;)

Subject: Re: Same Name, Different Song
To add to the confusion, I can recall 2 examples of songs from the 80's with the same name that were recieving airplay at the SAME time. In 1984, there was the classic John Waite song "Missing You," but at the same time there was also Sammy Hagar's pre-Van Halen project (H/S/A/S) with a song of the same name and receiving airplay.
In 1988, I remember a song called "Love Changes Everything" by Climie Fischer, and at the the same time there was a song of the same name by a different band, but I am drawing a blank and can't remember their name right now; maybe some of you might remember.

Wasn't that an Andrew Lloyd Webber thing? 'Love Changes Everything'

Ever so slightly different, 80'sTrivia...but confusing nonetheless...
Sam's hit was called "Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now" - and amazingly enough, both songs were in the UK Top 10 at the same time - June 1987...
Aside from John Waite, we also (sadly) had Chris De Burgh with a "Missing You", from late 1988...
Hoeveel, "Love Changes Everything" was indeed an Andrew Lloyd-Webber thing - from his musical "Aspects Of Love" (as sung by Michael Ball), coming hot on the heels of Climie Fisher's song of the same name - difference being CF had brackets around the last word...
One I've just thought of...
"Cry" by Godley & Creme (1985)
"Cry" by Waterfront (1989)
