Subject: A question about the song, "We Are the World."

Written By: William Cho on 01/15/02 at 09:52 a.m.

Can anyone help me?
I am currently enrolled in Grade 11 and my English project is due tomorrow. The project is mainly about describing/explaining a 80's song in specific way. I've picked "We Are the World," as the topic of my project, but I don't know anything about it!!! T_T I just know a general information that this song is mainly about helping Africa~*^^* (keke..obvious?)

I am looking for specific information such as a hidden message behind the lyrics, and figurative devices (ex:metaphore, assonance...so on) that are used throughout the entire song.
I will really appreciate your help. Thanks for your time!!

Subject: Lyrics for "We Are the World"

I am writing again.....for the lyrics of the song
I hope this doesn't disturb anyone^^

"We Are The World", U.S.A. for Africa

There comes a time when we need a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth - you know love is all we need

(CHORUS)
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Well, sendĄŻem your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us
By turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

( REPEAT CHORUS )

When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, let's realize
That one change can only come
When we stand together as one

( REPEAT CHORUS AND FADE )

I don't know how much you know about the "We Are The World" project, but I'm sure you could find plenty of imformation about it and similar projects online (including elsewhere on this site).  You might jump back to Britain's Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas", since it, and it's success in raising money to help the starving people of Africa (primarily in Ethiopia), inspired America's "We Are The World"

The song is pretty straight forward for the most part, focusing attention on the global community, which is a fair jump away from the inward focus of the "me-decade."  There are numerous metaphors focusing the human race as a whole (instead of as simply individual people or individual countries).  I'm sure if you skim the lyrics, you should be able to find them with no problems.

One of the other things of note is that the song is very Christian in origin, with numerous references to both God and to Christian values (treat others as you would want them to treat you).  Main thing that's interesting about this, least in my opinion, is that the money is being raise to help people who are primarily non-Christians.  You can read this as a multitude of ways (acceptance of various religions being one or attempts to convert being another)...

IMO, I think it's just plain and simply charity. No matter what the religion. There's a tendency for Americans to naturally make reference to those sacred things we hold dear, like God and values.
In an effort of that magnitud, even those who seem to be non-christians put their best foot forward.  :)

"my English project is due tomorrow"

? ? ? What have you been doing all this time?

The kind of project you're doing requires a lot more time and effort. Overnight was not going to cut it. And speaking of effort...

I agree.  The purpose and the belief behind the song was to promote charity and goodwill to aid the less fortunate, regardless of beliefs, creed, race, etc.  I don't believe the song was written with anything in mind other than serving that need.

Only reason I find the phrasing somewhat humorous is that history notes numerous times when people sought to give unwanted "aid" to others through religion (think colonial times with the amerindians...)

the song pretty much speaks for itself..... if you are looking for figurative language, metaphor and symbolism are the only types that you really need to read between the lines in order to find...... assonance (repetitive vowel sounds), consonance(repetitive consonant sounds), and imagery are all evidient by just looking at the lyrics.  If you are looking for allusion, you need to brush up on your Biblical knowledge and focus on the first stanza after the chorus.....

tsk....tsk....tsk....I agree with Hairspray....shame on you for not starting this project sooner.....
