Subject: A VERY tough question re an old song.
It was kind of popular, but I can't even place the time when I first heard it. Yesterday, I heard that song play on an overhead at the pier, but there was so much going on I couldn't put any attention to it. All I could hear was the voice and music - and part of a phrase from the chorus (even though I'm not even sure if those are the right lyrics). I may as well ask, just to see if anyone can lead me in the right direction. Once, the regulars are stumped, I'll probably have to give up on the search and wait another 10 years before I hear it again (which is easy since I have the patience of Job). Anyway, on with my inquiry:
The singer's voice sounds VERY similar to McCluskey's from OMD (actually, I still think it's OMD, but I have not heard it in any of the albums I own from them and it's not in the Singles collection). The music resembles "True" (Spandau Ballet), "Wicked Game" (Chris Isaak - the singer vaguely sounds like him too), and a little bit like "Don't Dream It's Over" (Crowded House): very mellow sounding guitar or guitar-like sound. And all I could hear off in the background is the phrase: "...there's no chaaaaance..." or "...there's no waaaaay..." sung softly (think: "More Than Words" by Extreme, which it also resembles).
This song resembles many tunes and a particular tone of voice (mainly, like the singer from OMD). God! This is killing me. It's such a great song too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very OT here, but that song makes me cry, thinking about Freddy Mercury and all. :'(

For some reason your description (although confusing as heck! ;) lol) has put the song "Hands To Heaven" by Breathe (sp?) in my head. The part sounds like: So raise your hands to heaven and pray, (I'll pray), That we'll be back together some daaaaayyy....
The other song I think of is country, and it's by Alabama. It's titled (YAY!) "There's Not Way". The chorus is: There's no way I could make it without you, There's no way that I'd even try, If I had to survive, Without you in my life, I know I wouldn't last a day, Oh, Baby, There's no waaaaayyy....
If it's neither of these, just ignore me from here on out, because I have no clue. ;) lol

I thought of the Alabama song too. But I've never heard Tarzan Boy talk about Country music, so I didn't mention it.
I wish he'd read these messages and help us out here! LOL

Bump! (oh Tarzan Boy??!!)

I'm here! I'm here! I've never heard any of the songs you guys mentioned. Just keep in mind that the lead singer's voice sounds like that of OMD and the music sounds like "Wicked Game" from Chris Isaak (remember that mellow guitar sound? It has that same sound. VERY slow paced and is probably played in the Adult Contemporary stations like KOST 103 here in SoCal). If Alabama has slow, non-country sounding, song out there then I should perhaps listen to them. The lyrics sound like it could be it, but, then, it's soooo vague (I've only heard this like 3 times in its entirety, I think...). Thanks and, please, keep those guesses coming ;)

I dont think it is this, but I like guessing games so I'll mention it anyway.....

Don't give up though! I'm still racking my brain trying to find it for Tarzan Boy too! :D

All I want to know is what pier you heard this at?
Subject: Re: A VERY tough question re an old song.
The Santa Monica pier, to be exact. Strange and gloomy at this time of year, but there were still a bunch of tourists and lookers out. I've listened to "Cry," "Hands To Heaven," "Who Wants To Live Forever?" and have not heard the Alabama song - though the singer's voice is not like OMD's (McCluskey). "Hands To Heaven" was very close - it's a song VERY similar to that, except even slower (believe it or not). The chorus line (the "hook") goes something like "...there's no chaaaance..." or "...there's no waaaay..." It's a very mellow tune and has similar guitar instrumentation to that of "Wicked Game." Aaaargh, (mimicking song) it's in my heeeeead...

Has anyone heard of this group? It's an R&B outfit, but the lyrics sound like it could be it - the song's from their 1999 album, though. If the lead singer's voice resemble's OMD's I can see the confusion this may have caused. This will be my first foray into modern R&B and I hope this is it :)

Well, I just listened to it at cdnow.com and I seriously doubt it's the one you're looking for. I could be wrong...so check it out for yourself. Their singer sounds nothing like OMD's singer. :(

I don't have the luxury of listening to something before I buy it. THIS is DEFINITELY NOT the song I'm looking for. It's godawful! I hate the R&B of to-day as much as I hate - naw, I really hate R&B!!!
I'm still looking. BTW, anyone want a free Ideal cd? Right now, I'm playing frisbee with it, but it's not a very good one.
