Subject: Remakes of 80's songs

Written By: XenaKat13 on 01/14/02 at 12:57 a.m.

On another thread, people are mentioning songs that they hate that are now stuck in their heads.  I've been humming one under my breath all day and I HATE it. >:(  >:(  >:(

The original, which I liked, was "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. 8)

The new one, sung by a very young person (not sure who, I keep wanting to say Lil' Bow Wow, but I know that is wrong) is getting alot of airplay on Nickelodeon. :-/

Not only has he changed the tune, but the words have been changed in such a major way that it's barely recognizable.  In fact I had to hear it about ten times before I was sure.

Can anyone else name a remake of an 80's song?  Is the remake good or really, really bad?

Well, Marilyn Manson has done remakes of two 80s songs, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Tainted Love". I won't say that they are bad; they are just a different interpretation. Limp Bizkit tortured George Michael's "Faith", IMHO.  Atomic Sex Kitten did a fairly good remake of the Bangles' "Eternal Flame".  Hip-hopster Marcus has done an interesting version of M's "Pop Muzik". It'll be interesting to see more and more 80s songs being redone as time goes by!!!  :)

It's L'il Romeo and some other kid.  One funny part is in the video Whoopie Goldberg plays the mom and is on screen yelling at the kid that takes the car.  You're right, shouldn't have been remade.

Britney Spears remade Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll", Kim Boyce remade "When Love Calls Your Name", Jon Gibson remade "Yah Mo B There", Ace Of Base remade "Cruel Summer", One Bad Pig remade "Rock The Casbah" and "Judas Kiss", Morella's Forest and No Secrets each remade Kim Wilde's "Kids In America", Faith Hill remade "Wild One", and a Christian group whose name I can't remember remade "Kyrie".

This means nothing to you. I can tell. Okay, how about the Depeche Mode tribute CD. It had some pretty phenomenal remakes...

i agree, i normally hate remakes of 80's songs. it makes you wonder if the newer artists can create their own music and own genre. i almost think it is a cheap way for them to make money. find a hit from the 80s, destroy it by adding a thumping beat, and then rap to it. they might as well throw in some profanity, just in case somebody recognizes it.

there is one exception to this. i really liked tu-pac's changes. that was a good song, which was remade from a 80's song "that's just the way it is". now that is one good remake. as for the rest, they suck.

So did The Muffs, and I still swear I heard an all-male band of some sort do it during the '80's. It might've been an Oi! band, but it sounded like the male backup singers in Kim Wilde's band. I wish I could remember who this band was.

I was never worried about tribute remakes.  Those are usually (but not always, I know), done with the utmost respect for the original artist's work.  I have heard covers of Beatles tunes for instance that, while not as good as the originals, still manage to convey the love and respect the cover artist has for the original work.

Also, I remember a song by Aerosmith, sometime in the late 70's or early 80's that I thought was really, really good.  It was called "Remember-(Walkin' In The Sand)."  Some years after, I heard it sung by a female singer and hated it.  Much to my chagrin, I found out her version was the original. :-[  :-[

Other remakes of 80s songs: Save Ferris remade "Come On Eileen" (an interesting choice for a band with a female lead singer), Kim Boyce remade "Love Resurrection", Mariah Carey remade "Open Arms", Blaque and Inoj each remade "Time After Time", Cyndi Lauper remade her own "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", the Spice Girls performed "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves" in concert, and some guy remade Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On". And, even though it's not really a remake, Mercedes used Pebbles' "Mercedes Boy" and Vanity's "Nasty Girl" as the basis for her song "Do You Wanna Ride".

Oh yes...Jessica Simpson's "I Think I'm In Love With You"..sure, she (or whoever her WRITER is) changed all the words, but the first time I heard the song, with that oh-so-obvious  "bump--buda bum---buh-bump"  (okay, that doesn't sound exactly right, but you know the part I mean!  LOL!  ;D ) I about drove off the road! LOL!  I mean, I'm used to hearing the darned rap artists doing it, it's "expected" (nonetheless annoying, however!)...but to hear it on just a plain old pop song by ANOTHER one of those little blonde teenagers ..(okay, in truth, I don't know how old she is--but she can't be too far over 18 !)  it was almost too much to bear!  I mean, sure, I suppose it's kind of catchy--but why did she have to use THAT music??
I'm sorry, but to a point, as bad as it may be, redoing most of the 80's songs is just WRONG to me!  :-X  But, in fairness, I suppose that every generation has thought the same thing when their generation's music starts being remade.  Sure I've heard a FEW that are tolerable--but VERY few.  Besides, when did our music become old enough to be remade anyway??  I though that was just done with old songs... ;)

Oh yes...they used to play that group constantly during free dance time at my daughter's dance school.  And the darned thing is, she would hear me play my ABBA Gold  cd at home and say "That's the song from my dance class!!"  She was only 4, so I guessed that she was too young to understand what the whole remake thing is all about, but I'd hate to think those poor kids could grow up thinking that remakes like that ARE the originals!  LOL!    ::)

In fact, as much as I do hate to burst the bubble on the greatest pop group of all time (notice I didnt say rock - The Beatles - or country - The Jayhawks) - The A*Teens' music has done, in their home country of Sweden - much better, chartwise, than the music of ABBA.

And the point that Marci made (I don't seem to be able to Reply With Quote for two or more messages, for one reason or t'other)... that makes me very annoyed when people are now singing Hey Baby by DJ Otzi, as opposed to Hey Baby by Bruce Chanel and DJ Otzi (I know there's been more versions, but these were the first and most recent)

One remake of a 1980's song I don't care for (although they did a good version of it) is Brooks & Dunn's remake of John Waite's "Missing You."  The reason I don't really like it is that they leave off the words "at all" in the line "I ain't missing you at all."  It makes it hard to sing along to when you remember the original.

I actually d/led a number of the Abba Teens songs last night just to compare them.  They really aren't bad (though I prefer the original).  At least they're willing to point fingers at their inspiration and give all the credit where it's due.  (Yeah, I know other people doing remakes legally give credit for other people's songs, but how often do they make an issue of letting others know that fact?)  In someways the A Teens remind me of BeatleMania of the 80s... anyone else remember them?

When I followed my dad's taste in music (weird 60's bands, 70's-90's alt-country, and any obscure music in-between), I was very grateful. This music I have listened to since I was two, maybe three, years old, and before I knew it, I was singing The Beatles, Jefferson Starship, etc without even knowing about it. I am grateful for this, and since having the internet, it has been a lot easier to pursue my personal musical tastes.

I can't stand how much 'sampling' there is in music these days.  I mean, come on!  Either remake the song or come up with your own damn music for your crappy lyrics!  It pisses me off to start hearing a good tune like Jack & Diane starting up, just to suddenly hear a woman singing some totally different lyrics to it.

And as much as I liked MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This", I even felt the same about him sampling the music.  Bottom line is this:  Unless you're doing a parody, write your own damn music!

Or a cover version, obviously. But then, there's still, in effect, got to be a different arrangement of instrumentation, I suppose.

Well, a cover is a remake, which I already stated is OK.  But sampling is another thing entirely...

I just heard Coal Chamber's version of Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey". It's okay, I suppose, but I still prefer Peter's version way better!!!  :)

Oh, what a shame!  That song just wouldn't be the same without Peter Gabriel's voice in it!!!  :-/

I agree totally.  If I had a nickel for everytime I started singing the original words when a song started up, only to have it be a "sample" starting out a different song.... :P

Not only would I be wealthy, my co-workers would not think I was some kind of weirdo. :-[   ;D

someone mentioned "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox on another thread.  insane Clown Posse remade that song recently (blah!!)
also, Alicia Keys sampled "Moonlight Sonata" (actually she played it.....) for the intro to her CD.  It doesn't sound half bad.

"The Final Countdown" has been covered several times.
Go to http://medlem.tripodnet.nu/Aphasia/covers.htm for a list of all cover versions of that and other EUROPE songs.

You can also listen to some samples.

I dislike A1's version of 'take on me', as the original is such a classic. Apparently they couldn't reach the high notes and had to use a computer to make them actually reach those notes.

  Another remakes:

  Ladies First cover Nu Shooz " I Can´t Wait";

  A very bad European girls band covered  " Fame";

Another European band called "Mad'House" did an ENTIRE ALBUM with covers from Madonna 80's songs!!! From Holiday to Like a Prayer!!! The remakes are really bad!!

A few weeks ago, I was in a bar and heard a remake of James Ingram's "Just Once".  I was pretty drunk at the time, but it didn't sound too bad. I don't know who covered it, and I haven't heard it since then.  I was pretty surprised to hear it because I hadn't even heard the original in a couple of years; it was from the soundtrack to one of my favorite 80's movies:  "The Last American Virgin."

Covers of 80's tunes that I really like...

'Smooth Criminal' - Alien Ant Farm (original: M. Jackson)
'The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead' - CrashTestDummies (original: XTC)
' Kiss' - Tom Jones with Art of Noise (original: Prince)
'Train in Vain' - Annie Lennox (original: The Clash)
'Kids in America' - Len (original: Kim Wilde)

I saw someone mentioned "Kyrie" recorded by a christian group. Actually, it was recorded by male christian named Mark Shultz it's from his second album "Song Cinema" his version does sound good. :)

I like that cover too, although as good as Ellen Reid was on this, she left out a verse.

I thought I heard Dwight Yokam do a cover of "Train in Vain" once on some college radio station. As for "Kids in America," one of my favorite versions is by The Muffs.

I just heard a HORRIBLE remake of Bryan Adams "Heaven" put to a club beat by some little skank.  Someone should've taken her out back and give her a good spanking!!!!

'Pumpkinhead' is a great song.  I think I prefer the Dummies cover slightly over the XTC original... Ellen Reid is a hellava vocalist!  And I'm gonna have to listen to the original for the 'missing verse'.

It's hard to imagine 'train in vain' as a country song.  Lennox gave the song kind of a "R n' B" feel.

I doubt any cover will top Kim Wilde's sex appeal on "Kids in America"  but Len's version is OK.  Now I'm very curious about the Muffs.

Thx

Do you have the soundtrack to the 1995 movie "Clueless?" You'll find it there.
