Subject: Comic Books anyone??
OK, so did anyone read comics in the 80's?
If you did which ones did you read?
Which characters did you love/hate?
I used to work at a comic shop in the mid-to late 80's so most will be familiar to me. I'll tell you mine after I see everyone else's answers ;)
Subject: Re: Comic Books anyone??
I'm gonna presume you don't include strip compilation books...
"Dirty Pair" by Adam Warren (actually, I don't think it's 80's; probably 90s... )
I didn't really read comics in the 80s - too much schoolwork, I suppose. I used to read Disney stuff (Chip and Dale, Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge) and maybe a little bit of Marvel/DC stuff (The Flash, Green Lantern, Fantastic Four)
Subject: Re: Comic Books anyone??
I read 'em in the 70s and early 80s. Some of the high points were Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers' run on "Batman", Neil Adams' stint on "Green Lantern", Claremont and Byrne's work on "X-Men", Frank Miller's "Daredevil" and anything drawn by Gil Kane or Gene Colan.

Archie comics. Loved Jughead. ;D

X-Men and Batman were REALLY big when I was in elementary and junior high in the mid-late '80s. Seemed like every kid had a thing for Wolverine or the Frank Miller Batman. We didn't even have any cool Batman movies back then, until 1989 that is. There was just that silly Adam West show, but Batman was still big.

I never read any of them. But my b/f and his friends in high school used to always hang out at this comic book store that a guy owned with his wife, who hated comics. Every time I went into the store, she'd give me whatever special editions had come in recently, already in mylar bags, because I had told her the first time I met her that the only good thing about these comics is that if you're smart enough to put them away in mint condition, they may be worth something some day. I have a whole box of them put away; couldn't even tell you what's in it.
I like the X-men cartoons and movie, though.

Spiderman would be my favorite. I also read X-men, Fantastic Four, Transformers, G.I. Joe, New Mutants, Secret Wars I & II, and various scattered books.
Into the early 90s I read all of the 2099 series (loved Spiderman 2099), numerous Robotech/Macross series, Venom, Guyver, Superboy, and various others...

I used to collect comics. My favorite comic is "Betty & Veronica". I also liked "Omaha The Cat Dancer".
Subject: Re: Comic Books anyone??
OK, as promised, my favorites:
The Legion of Super Heroes (and Brainiac 5 ;) )
Omaha the Cat Dancer
Desert Peach
Stinz (by the same author)
Mai the Psychic Girl
Cerebus
Elfquest
Those were the ones I absolutely could not miss. I was also fond of the Chris Claremont run of X-Men and Miller's Batman. As I said I got to read all of them while I worked at the comics shop, so they had to be really good to stand out.
Subject: Re: Comic Books anyone??
I read a lot of the Super Heroes comics and Science Fiction ones - including Star Trek. I'm being lazy again by not listing them. Many have already been mentioned. ;D

Cerebus

I totally forgot about Cerebus. Dave Sim, I think. Anyone else remember reading Starslayer?

I do, I do!! And now that my memory had been jogged, I also read Grimjack, Scout and the Eagle run of 2000AD, Judge Dredd ect. (BTW, the original comix were WAY better than the movie ;) )
I also customized one of my denim jackets with the TDP (Trans-Dimensional Police) logo from Grimjack. It was easy to find fellow comic readers in a crowd that way...

That's another I had forgotten about! Tim Truman, right? Egads! If this keeps up, I'll be off on a back issue hunt at the comic shop like I was 15 again... ;D

As a kid in the 70s, I was into Spidey, Capt America & The Falcon, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, and The Justice League, picked them up occasionally.
In the early 80s, a friend turned me onto The X-Men. I instantly started "collecting". Along with ALL of the X-titles, I picked up:
All of the above titles, Fantastic Four (during John Byrne's run), She-Hulk, The Hulk (when he became intelligent), and Daredevil.
During the early 90s, I started getting The Flash, The Tick, and almost all the Star Wars-related titles. (the X-titles alone nearly broke me. what, 6 or more a month?!)
Subject: Re: Comic Books anyone??
As a kid I read newspaper comics--Garfield, Bloom County (still my favorite cartoon of all time ever ever ever), Doonesbury (which I mostly did not get). In high school I moved on to Elfquest, Lobo, Sandman and The Tick. (Actually, I bet those last three were early '90s.) The guys I hung out with in high school started reading The Tick back when it was still a teeny tiny comic; I ran into one of the artists at a party once. I also think the same guys were into Cerebus--I remember reading some Cerebus strips and not liking them enough to buy the books.

They started well before the '80s, but lasted pretty much through: anybody else know the "Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers", featuring Fat Freddy, Freewheelin' Franklin and Phineas Phreak? And Fat Freddy's Cat - the best feline ever to be drawn on paper (sorry, Garfield, but that's how it goes)

Garfield and Bloom County are certainly numbers one and two.
But, the only complete collection of comics I have from the 80's is the Axa series that appeared in Great Britain. That was a great strip but it would never have gotten past the censors here in the U.S. It was a story about a young woman who grew up in a domed city one-hundred years after a nuclear war and chronicled her adventures out in the wastelands. It was pretty cool.

Damn straight I remember them!!! Gilbert Shelton is a genius. I still have a mess of them, although to my horror "The FFFB meet Don Juan" is missing. I also have a couple three Robert Crumb comics from the late 70s early 80s.
One of the Crumb stories that comes to mind is the suburban schlep who was kidnapped by Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) and sorta falls in love with an amorous female Bigfoot. Very weird and demented stuff.
By the way, do you remember who Freewheelin' Franklin's long lost father was?
