Subject: WORST, WORST, WORST 80s song?

Written By: Rapture on 01/12/02 at 03:47 p.m.

What is everyone's pick of the worst 80's song. The one that makes you cringe whenever you hear it?  ;D :-*

Mine is....          !! Yep! This songs sends chills down my spine! LOL

"Love Shack", B 52s

Most Michael Jackson tunes

"On MY Own", Patty Labelle and Michael McDonald

There's a surprising number of them, actually.

That was Buster Poindexter, aka David Johansen, former New York Doll.  Yeah, I'd put that on my list too.

Just kidding...I love DD. Ê
I kind of like "Love Shack", but I will second the whole "Hot Hot Hot" thing (unless it's the one by the Cure). ÊMy personal pick, though, is "Walking on Sunshine". ÊThat song makes me feel like walking on hot coals. :P

Mine would be a country song--Reba McEntire's horrid remake of the Everly Brothers' 1960 classic "Cathy's Clown."  She practically destroyed it.

I have to agree with you.  I'm not a big Reba fan anyway - to me she's the country equivalent of Mariah Carey.  UGH!
The WORST song though has to be Come On Eileen.

I think Ive mentioned this one before, but its GOTTA be:
"Im gonna walk 500 miles" by those geeky carrot-tops The Proclaimers!
EEEWWW! I get a shiver when i think about it.
"Agadoo" by black Lace is up there somewhere, only because it was thrashed into us at primary school, having been played over the school P.A. EVERY morning for about a month (we had to dance the actions etc)... I think our principal was on acid, just for the record... ;-D

I didn't know that song was released in the 80s.  I went and looked at my single and just now realized that it was an '88 song re-released in '93.  Most people hate it, but I like it.  Then again, I've always had a place in my heart for weird songs.

"Luka," came out in 1987. And I agree about it being overplayed, but Suzanne Vega does write some good songs. Ever hear "Some Journey" or "Marlene on the Wall" from her previous self-titled album? I think the writers of Tiny Toon Adventures were inspired enough by the title of the latter one to write a cartoon episode called "Elmyra at the Mall."

Yes, it would. However, back to the thread. In my opinion, the 80's brought many many bad songs (don't get me wrong, thousands more good ones, Take On Me etc), but in my opinion, songs like Karma Chameleon have some very bad bits in them... indeed, I'm talking from a purely musical point of view, but the song gets very annoying for one reason I can't put my finger on.

That's What Friends Are For - Dionne Warwick & Friends

Puttin' On The Ritz (as was already mentioned by Hairspray)

Physical - Olivia Newton-John

We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister

I've Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison (this song is just so stupid to me and he repeats himself way too much!)

There are others, but these are what come to mind right now.  Because I collect music, I do have most of these songs (on compilations).  But I tell you, as soon as it comes to one of these songs I have to quickly skip to the next track before I go crazy!  LOL!   :)

Also that song, Seven tears  - Gombay dance band is up there somehwere. However the worst/cheesiest song of the 80's has to be for me ................................................................................
..................Rene and Renata - Save Your love - Absolutly laughable and terrible at the same time! :)

I think Heart's "All I wanna do is make love to you" is thoroughly intolerable. It has to be one of the worst songs ever written--it's just bad bad bad... Usually when it comes on (thank goodness not all that much) i'm ok and will just make a face or sing all the bad lines horribly (i am the flower, you are the bee??, we walked in the garden, we planted a tree), but once in a while i get like Rainman and I just freak out and hafta leave the room/turn the radio off/whatever/bitch moan complain... i've never reacted that strongly to ANYthing..!!

I hated "Valley Girl" by the Zappas (Frank and Moon Unit). They should have followed their own advice and "gagged themselves with a spoon". :P :-X
(They didn't play it that much in Indy anyway, so for that I'm grateful.)
Runner-up: Anything from that no talent sl** they call Julie Brown. Especially "Trapped In The Body of a White Girl". I saw her during the "Weakest Link" comedian edition, as she must have been the stupidest contestant on there. She was even too stupid to call "Bank!" I hope they put her in that new game show 'The Chair" and she burns in it (figuratively, of course ;))

OK, I stopped catching up on this thread after 2 1/2 pages!!!!  I liked a few of the songs mentioned (VERY FEW), but most of them are now stuck in my head, warring with the the part of my mind that keeps me from being suicidal.

Luka, while having a strong child abuse message that should be heeded by one and all (now that the politically correct part is out of the way), TOTALLY SUX!!!  I hate that song, I'd like to rip Suzanne Vega's tongue out of her head through her nostrils every time I have to grit my teeth and listen to it.  ***Pats forhead dry***  Whew!!  Glad I got that out of my system.

Oh, yeah, and I don't like anything by the B52s, either.  No, that song, either.  I don't care.  I don't like 'em.

I thought of a few more that get on my nerves...

Roxanne - The Police (I do like the band, just not that song)

The Glamorous Life - Sheila E. (I didn't think she was a very good singer)

Oh Sheila - Ready For The World (probably one of my all-time WORST songs!)

We Built This City - Starship (again, I like the band, just not that song)

Two Of Hearts - Stacey Q (can't stand the stuttering in this song)

I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany

You Keep Me Hanging On - Kim Wilde (I only ever liked her "Kids In America" song...which was actually her first hit)

I just noticed that my list includes a lot of female singers.  It's not intentional, but subconsciously I would say that I probably prefer more male singers.   :P

I can remember my younger sister was 3 or 4 and I would play the song Puttin' on The Ritz to be mean(not really, teasing actually)...She would cry and throw a fit when she heard it..she would even hit you if you didn't turn if off and she would do the same if you sung the song to her...She is in her teens now and all you have to do is say Puttin on The Ritz and she still gets mad...Now that says something about the song...but I was that way about the 60s song My Guy and my mama would sing it to me to make me cry...

I'm quite a fan of U2, at least their earlier stuff (80s and very early 90s).  However, I have to admit that much of the mid-late 90s work had much to be desire.  I too felt like they were basically another band having drifted away from the style that they built their foundation upon.  I had pretty much such out U2 til their lastest album, which appears to be bit of a resurgence of their earlier work.  Hopefully it will just get better :)

Cis is right about the Birdie Song especially at weddings. In fact as soon as I hear anything by Black Lace or Jive Bunny I head off in the opposite direction as fast as I can.

There was also a song called 'Oh Superman' that until now I had just about managed to erase from my memory. There's a commercial with a guy singing extragantly in his car, but you can't hear anything (you see him from outside).  His friend walks over to the car and gets in and Mr. Roboto is blasting on the radio...

How about a corny title for this song:

What's with the word"cum"in the title of that song? I was just wondering?  ??? ;D

I thought that the singer of QR at first wanted the girls in the song to cum on and feel his noise? ??? ;D

Anyways, I have such an inmense variety of music interests it would boggle your mind! I'm bearing my soul here, but alas- I enjoy being true to myself:

I like opera. "La Boheme" & "La Traviata" being my favorites.

I like some old country and western and regular (up to 1989) country music. Kenny Rogers is a favorite of mine. "Lucille" & "She Believes In Me" are my favorites of his. I like Freddy Fender's "(I'll Be There) Before The Next Tear Drop Falls". I like a lot of Alabama and their song "Song Of The South" being a favorite.

I like oldie's but goodies like Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, The Platters,...

The songs that stand out for me are "Strangers In the Night", "Witchcraft", "The Great Pretender", "Only You",...

I LOVE Disco.

I like foreign music.

Did I leave anything out?

Oh, yeah -

I like some R&B, Blues, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Some Mild Rap (Not Gangster), House/Dance/Club/Techno music.

Classical music.

I like Most 60's music.

Like I said, a litle bit of everything!!!

I'm not ashamed. I'm proud. Very proud.  :) :) :) :) :)

I wonder what would happen if they tried? I don't think I said they were "bad," but generic. I don't doubt their musical talent at all. I just happen to like tons of other rock bands far more. Their lack of interest to break new ground is probably one of the problems I have with this band. I would gain respect from them as artists if, one day, they decided to throw in a pipe organ or play a lute or anything other than what a hundred other bands have done before them :-/

I can understand why they do that. Not because of the NKOTB not being (in some people's opinions) a good band, perhaps, but simply because a) they did not release any singles until 1990, and b) that's when they started to release any half decent stuff...

Actually, NKOTB were releasing singles starting in '88-'89.  This is when we started playing them at our station.  I actually had the displeasure of seeing these guys live with Tiffany, when my station sent me to the show for a review (that, and they had tix they wanted to get rid of.  Pick on the new guy...)  Hangin' Tough was released in '88.

My review of this show was NOT kind.  First off, Tiffany was a wet noodle.  No dancing on stage, no performance.  She walked to one part of the stage, and sang to that section of crowd.  She then walked to another part, and sang to that section.  Repeat ad nauseum.

NOKTB opened for her, and they were extremely obviously lip-synching.  I mean, how can you possibly move 5 feet away from the microphone, spoin away from it, and still be heard over the music?  Plus their performance was almost as bad as Tiffany's.  I made a lot of girls very angry with me over that review.

If it were not for anger, a lot of teenage girls would have no feelings left (what with the demise of so many bands over the past year). As for lip-synching, it was practically impossible for any bands to lip-synch prior to 1991 - not only was it impossible on shows like TOTP, but people just couldn't bother.

I hate to say you're wrong, but I must.  It was most certainly possible, and even done.  Even on TV.  Even Def Leppard confesses to lip-synching "Too Late For Love" in 1983 on a British TV Christmas show.  If it could be done in '83, why not '89?  And MV were lip-synching their shows before '91...

The Australian music TV show "Countdown" was very much like TOTP, in that bands appeared in person on the show in fromt of a live audience. It ran from the 1970s and *only* allowed lip-synch.

Midnight Oil refused to appear on the show because of this policy, and apparently other bands sent up the concept by obviously not synching.

That's very interesting....and I wish they had that kind of a policy here in the U.S.  It would certainly eliminate a lot of these bands who think they can (and many do) get away with just lip-synching and dancing.

mrgazpacho is soooo correct - Countdown was famous for its miming policy.  I knew a lead singer in a band who had a number one hit for weeks and every week he would have a private competition going as he was so sick of miming it every single week.  He would see how many times he could mime the F or C words in place of other words.  Then we would ring him and guess how many times he got away with it !!!

And it was always so funny when Shirl, or Daryl, or Mark H would get dragged off the stage by the girls and the singing would be continuing just perfectly - despite the fact there was someone elses tongue stuck down their throat !!!!!  Ahhhh those were the days !

For my money, it's gotta be "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Ritchie.  It's a slow song, and then inexplicably, it gets fast ("So you think you know the answer...."), only to get slow again with the majestic and uplifting (joke sign here) "Believe in who you are..."

This song is a perfect 10 on the Unintentional Comedy Scale.

I tolerate it now and feel a bit nostalgic hearing it. The lyrics I ignore/tune-out. The music itself is alright though. I bring this song into the thread because there are those in my cirlce who rate it as one of the worst songs to come out of the 1980's.

Katrinawitch is talking about Sheriff's "When I'm With You" from 1982 and then re-released 1988.

The tune is a very good ballad and the band can indeed carry a tune. So much so, that the ending of this song (and singer) once held the record for longest note carried out by a singer, without the help of technology. It may still hold that record unless someone's broken it since.

The most overplayed songs everywhere are actually from that "Joshua Tree" album.  :P

Mine would be "Lady in Red" by Chris deBurgh.

For all of you with these songs going through your head, my best friend has a theory that if you start singing "Another One Bites the Dust" it will erase the previous song, but not start going through your head.  Just a suggestion... :)

I didn't know that song was released in the 80s.  I went and looked at my single and just now realized that it was an '88 song re-released in '93.  Most people hate it, but I like it.  Then again, I've always had a place in my heart for weird songs.
End Quote

It was a 1988 song in Europe, but brought to a 1993 movie in USA.  I still prefer it as a 90s song.  I like it too, so there! :P

There are a few I don't like, but I'd have to choose the way obvious Mickey... I think the video startled me as a kid!... or was that Genesis' "Land of Confusion" video?  Naw, that just scared me!  Mickey just had the evil demented cheerleader.

Nooo! How can you say that. They've made some of the best pop songs in the 80s. Last Christmas, Edge of Heaven, Everything She Wants and especially Freedom are absolutly great! There have been some that are a little 'dodgier' as it were, like 'Wham Rap' and 'I'm Your Man', but still - they were just a fun band.

I still propose that Renee and Renata - Save Your Love was the worst song of the 80s, by far!
