Subject: Your favorite radio station in the 80's

Written By: ThunderVamp9 on 01/08/02 at 11:51 p.m.

I was looking at some of the past threads regarding underplayed music and artists, and it got me thinking.  There are a LOT of songs listed that I've never heard of.  The radio stations in our area pretty much stuck to the Top 40.  There weren't any stations playing New Wave.  What were the stations in your areas like, and what was your favorite station playing?

Then, WOMP FM 100- a top 40 station- (a .5 was later added).

Now, 107.5 WEGW.-a rock/hard/metal station. They play 'The Big Show ' with John Boy and Billy in the mornings!  :P  They are a riot!!!  :D

Lived in Phoenix during the 80's.  Favorite stations were:

KZZP 104.7 FM (Top 40, HOT MIX Radio show, now KISS FM)
KOPA 100 FM (Top 40 until mid-80s, then changed format)
KUPD 98 FM (Rock)
KDKB 93.3 FM (Rock - New & Classic at the time)
Power 92 FM (Top 40/R&B)
Y95 FM (came out in mid- to late-80's; Top 40)

Morning shows:  Used to listen to Dave Pratt on KUPD ("Suck Wind" call-in days!  :D  Call in and tell whomever it is you're irritated with (boss, friend, etc) to SUCK WIND!!!).  Also Bruce Kelly/Kelly & Company (first on KZZP, then switched to Y95.  Loved the song parodies by Rob "Iceman" Izenberg.  He used to be on the show from time to time - now with Premiere Radio Network.)

I used to listen to 101.5, KPLZ..it mostly just played top 40 stuff.  Still does, I would imagine, but I don't listen to it anymore.  I listened to an 80's station, 96.5 "the Point" until recently.  Partially because they started adding 90's stuff (ick) and then my antenna got broken so I couldn't listen to the radio at all!  ;D  I will occasionaly listen to it when we're in my husband's car, but mostly I just play my cd's now.  :D

For me, in Providence, RI/Boston, MA, it was JB-105 and WHTT 103 for the hits in the early-mid 80's.  Boston's WZOU 94.5 was good into the 90's when they went all hip-hop as Jam'n 94.5.  Maine had WJBQ and WIGY.
Remember when you could play Rick Springfield and Shalamar in the same music set?

For me, in Shrewsbury England, two of the main stations I listen to now are Beacon FM and Classic Gold WABC. They just didn't have so much following in the 80's. These play all sorts of music from all 5 most recent decades, from any genre imaginable. These two radio stations are two of the most popular stations in the country. These stations were playing almost any music you can think of.

then, I listened to Q96 in San Antonio. ÊThey played a lot of Depeche and the Cure. ÊAfter they quit, I listened to Froggy 94 out of Austin (my friends and I were on one of their commercials for a while, singing "Everything She Wants" by Wham ;D ), and 99.5KISS in San Antonio (still listen to KISS, rock). ÊThere is a station in Austin (107.7, I think) that plays 24 hours of 80s. ÊIt is the greatest.

Living in the LA area in the 80s had many benefits..one of them being the fabulous KROQ 106.7 !!  Damn the music was so cool then ...The Cure, Duran, Depeche Mode, the Go-Go's, Oingo Boingo, New Order, Siouxie and the Banshees...24 hours a day!  And then there was Rodney on the Roq, a nite time program on weekends that KROQ aired...Love Line started on KROQ back in the 80s before it became a syndicated radio show and eventually a program on MTV...  Good ole KROQ! 8)

ZZQ in the early 80s. They were an album rock station and played a wide variety of rock music. Unfortunately, they switched to a country format in either 81 or 82.

There was also TYX, which was a pop/top 40 station, also early 80s. They had jim Chick and Scott Mateer on in the mornings as the Dawn Busters.

Later came 98 Rock, which played metal. Mid 80s. Lasted a couple years before a format change.

Currently it's Z 106 (WSTZ) and Arro 94. Z plays rock, with 80s hair bands after eight. 94 plays 60s - 80s rock and pop, with all 80s after eight.

Ours was Z00-98..with the Uglies (Mr and Mrs Ugly)..I remember Mrs Ugly came up with this parody called...Peter the Meter Reader (remember G!!)  They played ALL the new good 80's stuff.  Then when the 90's came along they fired the Uglies and the radio station went totally weird and grunge...now they are the best of 70's 80's and 90's which means Neil Diamond and Tom Jones (?)

As far as a GOOD 80's station now...we don't have one...only on Wed. we have a way back Wednesday all day and then flash back weekends, this on 100.3.  I heard we are getting an all 80s..but see I am in the redneck south, Arkansas, so we are lucky if we get anything but HONKY TONKING!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, for us in Maine, it was WIGY and WJBQ out of Portland until about the mid 80's.  The it was FM103 WTHT, and also G-98.  But these stations really only played Top 40, with WIGY playing a lot more rock.  We didn't get stations playing Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc.  I have to confess that I know just about none of this kind of material.

106.7 KROQ in Los Angeles (naturally).  Heck, up until about a year and a half ago Richard Blade was still 80s music daily at lunch.  Unforturnatlely I haven't had a chance to hear it since he left, so I don't know what the lunch show is like now :P.  I think my brother still has a tape of when Duran Duran hosted a show one night...

I listened to several radio stations in the 80s. I started listening to WNDE 1260 and the now defunct WIFE. Then I listened to KISS 99 (disco before it changed to WZPL, Indy's Apple) and WFBQ (Q-95) before and after Bob and Tom had their morning show in 1983. I guess my favorite was pre-Bob and Tom Q-95.

Thanx, DJ Midas!  :D  I haven't heard any mention of KOPA in years!   I moved to Mesa in '81.  I remember listening to the call-in request show (Top 9 at 9?  8 at 8?   ??? I forget the time)  and there was always at LEAST 2 Duran songs every night.  (not that there's anything wrong with that!  ;D )

When it changed to KSLX (classic rock), that became the station I listened to most.  I'd visit KZZP once in a while, but seemed to hear the same songs all the time.  (hmm, Prince's "Let's Go Crazy"...must be 20 past the hour...  ::) )

I now listen to 96.9 (one of those "80s, 90s, & Now"-type stations) which usually packs the weekends (especially long holiday weekends) with plenty of 80s stuff. :)

And now that Pratt's on the Zone, I'm listening to his show in the afternoons.   ;D

99.3 the Fox! The Fox Rox! Well, back in the 80s it did...now we say The Fox Sucks!

Bring back Billy Courage...bring back the days when Larry and Willy actually didn't refer to the 80s as the decade that taste forgot...

You're welcome.  I listened to KOPA primarily on Saturday nights in '85 when they debuted the HOT MIX program (which inspired me to DJ).  Then HOT MIX moved to KZZP on Friday nights in '86.

I was in Phoenix about a year and a half ago and none of the radio stations held my interest long enough...I was digging KZZP playing Alice Deejay b/c no one here plays dance music on the radio! (Of course they played it quite frequently.  Like you said...)

Do you remember a faint signal (where I was in the NW Valley anyway) at 100.3 FM, KEY 100.3 is what the name was (I think).  They'd play a lot of alternative/progressive like Kraftwerk, New Order etc.  I enjoyed it when I could tune it in.

Was it the same KROQ that went national?  I remember for a couple of years in the 90's a station out of LA went national.  They played mostly hard rock and heavy metal.  I just reread your post and realized that if it is the same station, they had a serious format change.

Most of the stations in my state were awful...either just top 40 or country.  We had 2 rock stations that I could listen to without throwing things at the radio...101.1 KBER it played the hard rock/metal format and 103.5 (rock 103 at the time) they played Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Kiss, Pink Floyd...you probably get the picture. :)

The only thing at 100.3 I remember was Z-Rock in the early 90s (from Texas or something I think).  It became The Edge (alternative) up until it went Spanish a couple months ago.

That station was the best, if you liked rock. I always liked going to NB, so I could listen to 99.5 KISS.

I lived in Portland, OR. My favorites were Z100 and Q105.  Q105 changed to adult contemporary. Z100 is still top 40, but mainly Rap.

I listened almost exclusively to oldies rock in the 80s, but can't remember the call letters of the main oldies station in Boston at that time--was it WMEX? I also listened to WHDH, which had mostly pop music in the morning (along with the news and weather), talk shows in the evening, and Jim Sands's oldies show on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Now: WZLX (classic rock), WODS (oldies), and 92.9 FM (mix of pop and soft classic--it is the only station my crappy office radio will pick up!!).
