Subject: The Bicentennial

Written By: Voiceofthe70s on 07/03/22 at 9:28 am

Here's a bit of remembrance for this July 4 weekend.

Those of us who lived through the 1970s-and lived in the US-will remember the Bicentennial year of 1976. The 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States. To say it was "over commercialized" is an understatement.

Here's are some ads that are an example of the array of Bicentennial  products.

Bicentennial T shirts and tube socks
(Yes tube socks. It was the 1970s. And, truthfully, I'd take tube socks any day over those little mini-socks that many men wear today that resemble women's "peds"):

Bicentennial condoms and chain saws:

Bicentennial eye makeup and cigarette lighters:

I remember watching commercials and seeing all the hype there and in the news.
The 250th is coming up in a few years. Chances are it will be over commercialized as well.

I specifically remember the "Bicentennial Minutes" that ran on TV all year. Every celebrity, movie & TV actor and otherwise famous person in existence did one of these one minute spots detailing a factoid of some aspect of American history.

I don't recall any of the specific ads in the pictures.  However I remember the TV commercials and also I recall "Bicentennial Minutes" on TV.  It was really hyped - I didn't mind that so much, but afterwards it felt a bit of a letdown, at least to me.  :-\\  On the other hand, I'm glad to have experienced it.

I remember going to the fireworks that year and felt bad that my sister wasn't going because she was sick. I remember thinking of all times to be sick-during a such a historic time.

Yeah, I know the video has nothing to do with the Bicentennial. Couldn't help myself.

All I know was that some teenage girl in high school used her telekinesis to burn up a whole school. Hundreds of people died. She was like 16/17 years old. This was during prom and it was 1976!  8)

Really?  :o  I was 16 then and in High School (ending my Junior year), but never heard this on the news (although TBH I didn't always pay attention to the nightly news as a teenager).  I'm curious now - do you have a source?

They poured pig's blood on her. She bullied relentlessly. She was very bookish and shy. She had telekinetic powers.  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

OK, you got me.  I utterly despise horror movies, never saw Carrie (even as my peers spoke of it plenty).  I was expecting to hear a news story.

I would love to have telekinesis, image what I would do to my enemies?  :o

This happened when I was a teen. I had (and still have) a BIG stuff gorilla named George (named after Curious George). George used to sit on a chair in my room. One night after the lights were out, I laid there concentrating on George to fall on the floor. I don't know how long I was there concentrating on it when I heard him move!  :o :o :o I got so scared that I stopped and never tried it again.

A tangent off of a tangent.  :D ;D ;D  I got George for Christmas when I was 16. We had to get up really early (before the sun) because we were going to my sister's who lived in Conn. (We were in NY). We lived in an apartment and my step-father insisted that we have orange juice before opening gifts. I went into the kitchen but passed the doorway to the living room and glanced in. George was sitting in the chair in the corner of the living room. I went into the kitchen and there was my mother & step-father. I was thinking, "Who is that in the living room?" It wasn't until the lights went on in the living room that I was who it was. (Oh, that Christmas, my parents also got me the Corvette that I asked for. They just forgot to get me the glue so I could put it together.  :D ;D ;D )

Ok, tangent over. Back to subject.  :D ;D ;D ;D

They say that empires only last 250 to 300 years. Did that mean that past 1976 America was past its peak?

The Holy Roman Empire ruled over much of western and central Europe from the 9th century (800) to the 19th century (1806). It envisioned itself as a dominion for Christendom continuing in the tradition of the ancient Roman Empire and was characterized by strong papal authority. Lasting 1006 years that is more than 250 to 300 years.
