Subject: Late 1960s-Early 1970s: Ugly Earth Tones

Written By: 90s Guy on 06/22/18 at 1:41 pm

Anyone else noticed how ugly the late 60s through early 70s was in terms of colors? For example, I was watching the very first episode of The Brady Bunch, broadcast in the Autum of 1969 and every furnishing is a bad yellow or puke green color.  Jump across the Atlantic and several years to the 1971 film Diamonds are Forever and it's that same brown look. Why were ugly color so popular?

Although people now turn their nose up or laugh at the harvest gold and avocado colors of early 70s kitchen appliances, I like the way they looked. Still do. I would take them any day over the stainless steel kitchen appliances currently in vogue. I don't see the appeal of those. They make every kitchen look like an industrial restaurant kitchen.

It could've been the time period when colors became so bland.

Well as a teen I thought those colors were cool!  They may look odd today...

I've mentioned this before, but Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee was preserved almost exactly as it was on the day Elvis Presley died in 1977 (with the exception of the museum that has been added on since then) and is a perfectly intact time capsule of tacky 1970s interior design.

I think the idea was to make it look more like the outdoors. Probably not very apparent in blurry, washed out screenshots :P

My sister moved into my aunt's old house and she has been getting rid of my aunt's decor-which included a gold shag rug, mustard color walls, and such. It was pretty bad. Looks a lot better now.

My grandma had this really ugly 70s wallpaper. It was like a dull swamp green with decorations. She got it maybe around 68, 69 and it stayed in place until 89. I'll post it later. Her house looked so much better in the early 60s but then again I love mid century modern.

Even though I didn't particularly care for it back in the day, I think it's better than what we have now in 2018.  Have you noticed all men's clothing today is either black, white, or 50 shades of gray in between?  Sometimes, they'll be really edgy and add dark blue or olive green to the mix!  It's really frustrating.  The 2010s have even done what I never thought was possible: make me appreciate 80s fashion.  I was never a big fan of most 1980s fashion, but at least they had colors back then.  You could easily find teal, pink, lime green and yellow T-shirts and shorts back then, and men weren't afraid to wear them.  Today we have gray, gray, gray, gray, gray:

Well, at least Mr. Bond has enough colour sense not to wear grey.

Actually, those dresses aren't that bad.  I think the reason has to do with to the purple.  Purple is an unearthly color and it compliments the golds, browns and cinnabars quite nicely.

Reminds me a little bit of the Singapore Airlines uniforms.

I don't mind neutrals - or specifically gray - but this is going a bit overboard  :-\\

Makes you wonder what the decorators of that time period were thinking, right? Any one of those colors, on their own is not necessarily ugly. The combination of the large pieces of muted colors all mashed together with nothing light to anchor them, I think is what made it so drab and ugly.

Take any of those colors and make them accent pieces only, or marry them with complementary colors- it makes such a difference.
