Subject: Late 70's Playlist (NO Disco)
Written By: AmericanGirl on 04/16/18 at 8:44 pm
My hubby wants a late 70's playlist for his long commutes. No Disco! His preferences tend toward a mix of rock-oriented and popular hits. We agreed to avoid soft ballads to keep him awake in the early morning. Here's what we came up with so far:
John Stewart - Gold Chicago - Take Me Back to Chicago
E.L.O. - Do Ya Heart - Barracuda
Foreigner - Feels Like the First Time Cars - Let's Go
Dan Fogelberg - The Power of Gold Billy Joel - My Life
Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good Fleetwood Mac - You Make Loving Fun
Steely Dan - Peg Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
Supertramp - Goodbye Stranger Jay Ferguson - Thunder Island
Santana - She's Not There Kansas - Point of Know Return
10CC - The Things We Do for Love Randy Newman - Short People
George Harrison - Crackerbox Palace Boston - More Than a Feeling
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You
Steve Miller Band - Jet Airliner Tom Petty & Heartbreakers - Listen to Her Heart
Talking Heads - Life During Wartime Nick Gilder - Hot Child in the City
I need help to add to this playlist. Suggest (or even better, post) a late 70's ('76 thru '79) song that might fit. Thanks! :)

How about "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart? I think it fits comfortably among what you already have. Not to mention it was produced by Alan Parsons, who already features on your list.

I'm suprized that there is no 'Journey' in that list. I would have had Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son as well. .... and of, course Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street (or at least Steeler's Wheel's Stuck in the Middle).

I notice you have one song by the Cars on that list.
How about "Just What I Needed" or "Good Times Roll" or "You're All I've Got Tonight", all from their self-titled debut album.

Here is the rock classic Roller by April Wine from 1979 ...

Here is one from 1978 called Sweet Misery by a group called Teaze. As far as I am aware, this was not a hit outside of Canada, but it is such a fantastic song, I feel anyone who loves the soft rock/rock sound of the 70s should know about it.

How about some prog-rock mixed in with some blues, Titanic-Macumba (1973)
I think she was asking for LATE 70's stuff...

Stuck In The Middle With You" is from 1973, so it's early 70s. But you are correct, Stealers Wheel was Gerry Rafferty's band before he went solo, and he co-wrote and co-sang "Stuck In the Middle With You".

Actually, scratch Journey ... All the hits I liked from them were sung by Steve Perry (and in the 80's). So, I'm guessing he is not an Eagles or Doobies fan (nothing in the list). If it's late 70's ... I guess you'd have to be a Michael MacDonald fan. 'What a Fool Believes' was a great song. I remember hearing it for the first time, in 1979, and was blown away with it.
ELO was huge in the late 70's. Jeff Lynne wrote Sweet Talkin' Woman, Telephone Line, Turn To Stone ,and Mr Blue Sky around that time period.
ACDC also had some good tunes in the late 70's. Highway to Hell and Dirt Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.
What about bands like The Police ?
I would always have Kansas - Dust In the Wind (but probably too soft for this list).

Oh yes, they debuted around that time; "Can't Stand Losing You", "Roxanne", "Message In A Bottle" and "So Lonely" were late 70s hits of theirs.
Speaking of early new-wave hits, "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello also comes to mind.

In addition to My Life, pretty much anything else from Billy Joel's "The Stranger" and "52nd Street" albums. Also the first few years of Fleetwood Mac with Nicks & Buckingham in addition to "You Make Loving Fun". Rhiannon is from '75, but fits in their stuff from the late '70s. Also, a couple Hall & Oates songs from this era, including "Sara Smile" and "Rich Girl". Others I'd suggest:
Pablo Cruise- What Cha Gonna Do? and Love Will Find A Way
Foreigner- Hot Blooded
Steve Miller Band- Fly Like An Eagle
Player- Baby Come Back
Bob Seger- Hollywood Nights and Old Time Rock and Roll
Queen- You're My Best Friend, Somebody To Love, Spread Your Wings, We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions
KISS- Beth and Shout It Out Loud
Paul McCartney & Wings- Silly Love Songs, With A Little Luck, Maybe I'm Amazed, Goodnight Tonight
Stevie Wonder- Isn't She Lovely
Boston- Don't Look Back
Heart- Heartless
Eric Clapton- Lay Down Sally
Exile- Kiss You All Over
The Who- Who Are You
Little River Band- Lonesome Loser
Eddie Money- Baby Hold On
Jackson Browne- Running On Empty
Linda Ronstadt- It's So Easy
Chicago- Baby What A Big Surprise

Queen has had a lot of really great songs but IMO, I think this is a VERY underrated song. Great song but most people have never really heard of it. I put this in my top 5 of Queen songs.

I'm not a Journey fan but wasn't Infinity released in 1978? The first Journey album with Steve Perry,
Wheel In The Sky, Feeling That Way, Lights, they were some pretty big hits.
I'll think on it but I doubt I can contribute too much, my play list would be very progressive laden
and absolutely no radio rock.

I just don't recall any big hits from Journey (on Australian radio) in the late 70's. There was a period where I stopped listening to radio for a while though...
Yes, your playlist would be very different ... probably ealrlier 70's with Pink Floyd, Cream and Yes?

The entire album of Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell. (Was listening to it this morning.)

If so... I mentioned the Cars' self-titled album earlier in this thread, and realized there's one other song on there that tends to receive radio airplay despite not being an actual hit on the charts... "Bye Bye Love." It gets played semiregularly on classic rock stations.
