Subject: 1971

Guys, was 1971 more 60s or 70s?

Subject: Re: 1971

1971 was early 1970's.  Firmly.  The period of 1969-ish through 1972-ish had a unique vibe, the early 70's, the late psychedelic era, a very distinctive time.  It wasn't the 60's anymore.

The cultural 60s ended in late 1972. No one event caused this, it just finally petered out on it's own. Having said that, a subset of the "late 60s which ended in late 72" was "the early 70s". While still part of the cultural 60s, "the early 70s" of 1971 and 1972  most assuredly had it's own vibe as well. An incredibly unique time, sadly now almost forgotten.  1971 was an INCREDIBLE year for music. I mean INCREDIBLE. So much so, it has it's own book dedicated to it "Never a Dull Moment: 1971, The Year Rock Exploded" by David Hepworth. Worth a read if you can get it in a library or find it cheaply online or in a used bookstore. Don't pay full price for it.

Because 1971 was a 'rite of passage' year for me (6th grade/7th grade), I'll post a tune or two  :)

I think it felt like a 1960s epilogue and a 1970s prologue, but it wasn't just a bridge, it felt like its own unique time with some of its unique trends.

You are quite accurate. I was saying a similar thing in my previous post. It makes me think of how Hunter S. Thompson described this period. He called it "that time between the 60s and 70s".

If your name is Stevie Wonder and it's the early 70's, it's never a bad idea to cover (or in this case reinterpret) the Beatles...

(The Sylvers weren't widely known at that time...)

Instrumentals were big in the early '70s, especially something as Funky as this gem from a group of Motown geniuses  :D  Featuring Soul Train footage from then (incidentally it was still a local Chicago show in '71 - but not for long)  For extra credit, note the fashions and hairstyles - very "1971-ish"

Bobbi Humphrey- Don't Knock My Funk

I never heard this before.  But I like it!  (I have heard of Bobbi Humprey.)  In 1971, being eleven, I didn't listen to Jazz Fusion at that time.  The genre wasn't terribly popular in 1971 but was clearly on the rise.  As you may know, the 70's was a strong decade for Jazz Fusion and it probably peaked between '76 and '79, when we heard the likes of Bob James, Herb Alpert, Donald Byrd/Blackbyrds, Grover Washington Jr., the Crusaders, George Benson, etc.  It was an unmistakable mid-late 70's phenomenon.  So Bobbi Humphrey had a listening audience then, no question.  But her audience likely averaged older than, say, eleven  :)
