Subject: How did everything go from being elegant (in the 60s) to being tacky in the 70s?
Written By: 90s Guy on 05/11/17 at 8:20 pm
How did everything from furniture, architecture styles, men and women's clothes, hairstyles, cars, and other mechanical objects go from being so sleek, elegant, and "modernistic" in the 1960s - almost futuristic - to being so tacky in the 70s? The cars became boxes. The electronics all became rectangular and very ugly. The vibrant colors of the 1960s were gone, replaced by the ugly earth tones and subdued colors of the 70s. The hair got even longer. Mustaches became huge across the USA as did those long sideburns. You went from having your standard tuxedo in the 1960s to a frilled shirt tuxedo with an enomorous tie in the 1970s. That horrible 70s wallpaper in comparison to the minimalist cute 60s wallpaper. Women's fashion all ugly and earth tone as compared to the various awesome 60s looks (the pretty sundresses, the mod looks and such).
Around when did the change occur?
60s

Even James Bond was worse for wear:

Maybe it was a hangover from all the bad drugs they did in the late 60's. ;D

It was all down to a change towards a more sophisticated way of life.

As for Sean Connery as James Bond.
He eventually tired of the role and the pressure the franchise put on him, saying " fed up to here with the whole Bond bit" and "I have always hated that damned James Bond. I'd like to kill him".

Some people would say 1967 is already tacky.

I mean the style choices. The fine gray suit compared to the loud, huge, tacky yellow tie and long grey sideburns.

The Wood era doesn't look very sophisticated.

Poor Elvis Presley. He had the misfortune of dying in 1977, which was probably the peak of American tackiness.
I've visited Graceland twice and Elvis's home, aside from the modifications necessary to convert it into a museum, has been left almost exactly as it was on the day he died.
I recommend that everyone visit Graceland at least once in their lifetime. I gained a much greater appreciation for Elvis after going there.
That, and Graceland is a perfectly intact time capsule of the 1970's. The loud, bizarre colors on the walls of his TV room, the baby-poop green appliances in his kitchen, it's all there.
And, oh my God, the Jungle Room. You have got to see the Jungle Room in person to believe it. :o :o :o

But why was orange yellow and brown a 70's color?

That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Those colours have been around for a very long time?

Obviously. But each decade has its particular palette and for whatever reason the 70s was brown and yellow, Earth tones.
Sorry if I pissed in your cornflakes somehow. But I don't need to be attacked needlessly.

Browns are found in the bark of plants, mud, and deserts, while the yellow comes from the sun, along with orange representing another shade of the sun (perhaps near sunrise and sunset). But it was obvious that the counterculture had started to infiltrate everything, and the mantra of "reclaim the earth" reflected in this anti-fashion mentality. Saying "Mr. and Mrs." in lieu of either "Ms." or just the man's name, rock music now acceptable in ways that it never used to be, and the beginnings of postmodernism contributed to this. The '80s tried to revert back to the '50s-'60s mantra of elegance, but it had that "tried too hard" look that resulted in some of the cheesiness, and then the '90s/'00s had reversed it again. Only recently has the "elegant" technique started to return, but its obvious its not the same as a consequence of the new wave of technology.
As far as when it became tacky, it seemed to gradually phase in between about 1966 with the psychedelic movement taking off to around 1973 or so. People wanted of course to be liberated by their own philosophies as opposed to being conformed by numerous rules, and thus the "Me Generation" was born. But lately, with all these new rules that seem to crop up, it seems like we're reverting back again.
The 2010's palette IMO seems to be blue, silver, and white.

Fashion changes for the most part because someone influential tries something different, it catches on, and a new trend is born. (Or in many cases fashion designers get together and decide they need to start a new fad to make more money :-\\ )
It's simplistic to look at the 70's as one set of styles (same with any decade). Fashion morphed and changed throughout the decade. IMO clothing fashion in the 70's changed more rapidly than any decade I can recall - but that from the eyes of a fashion-conscious teenage girl ;D
Forgive me for repeating myself, but this is an illustration of how fashion changed throughout the 70's. The three videos are from Soul Train (filled with kids who wore regular, albeit exaggerated, clothes) in three different 70's years:

I guess they wanted to dress tacky cause it was the way they felt about themselves.

Hippies and mods made fashion more 'casual', and away from the 1950s styles. It starts getting more 'tacky' around 1966/1967 in my opinion, although I wouldn't call it tacky since I still like most of it.

I don't mind 70's fashion. I just need to lose some pounds in order to fit into those clothes. :o
