'Good Times' Movie: Hollywood Plans Adaptation of 1970s TV Show

Well I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

As much as Hollywood seems to be bankrupt in original ideas, I'm surprised Good Times hasn't already been adapted to the big screen.

I was initially a fan of the show as young kid, but as it grew on (and after the killed off James Amos character), it became just a shadow of its original premise.
J.J. got on my nerves, but it was still fun to watch.
It was one of the few shows at the time that tried to address some of the social issues that were going on at the time.

The movie is supposed to be set in the 60's however and not the 70's as the TV show was, I think that's a mistake, but we'll see...

If you were old enough to remember the show, what do you think? Will they do it justice, or screw it up?

Sometimes it works (Brady Bunch movies) and sometimes it doesn't (Fat Albert etc etc). I'll hold judgement, but I do love Good Times!

Good Times dealt with some serious issues.  I don't know how I feel about this show becoming a movie.  Like most TV show to movie remakes, they will mess it up

Not from what I read. The movie will be set in the 60's with a full family (i.e. James Evans alive), NOT starting out from where the series left off. I'm not sure about Penny though.

The idea of a movie wouldn't of been so bad, set in the 70's. That was what made the series "work".

The reasoning for placing the new movie in the 1960's is there is supposedly more new conflicts in that era and therefore more for the writers to work with as far as a plot is concerned. That's why the movie will fail.

The movie where the black family struggles to stay together despite poverty, race/class and culture changing events of the 1960's has been done before, and the 1970's provided a completely different "result" atmosphere after some of the aspirations and hopes of the 1960's didn't work out/didn't come to be. That again, is why the series worked, in the 70's families in the projects/ghettos, had a whole different set of issues & problems to deal with that were not the same old 60's ones.

BTW, Samuel L. Jackson's name has been thrown around to play the James Evans role...not sure on who would be Florida or JJ, they'd have to really do a good casting job to get those roles properly cast.

Who knows if it's going to be funny?

I never watched Dark Shadows back in the day, but I loved the Johnny Depp remake as a standalone film (although the ending was a bit farfetched).

We are in the middle of watching the series (that is now on DVD). Haven't seen the Johnny Depp one yet (or the 1991 remake for that matter either).

There was a movie back in the early 60s which inspire the TV show  There was some talk a while back that Nicolas Cage might star in the remake. Haven't really heard much recently.  Brandon Cruz is about the same age I am.
