Subject: FAVORITE 1970s TV Comedy
Written By: warped on 11/16/12 at 5:13 am
What's your favorite 1970s TV Comedy?
Hard to remember or list all the best shows, probably a few I missed (or didn't like ;D) Shows like "Benson" or "The Facts of Life" or "Get Smart" or other shows primarily in other decades were not included here. Mostly focusing on American TV.
You may select up to 5 shows to vote for.

M*A*S*H was one of the best shows EVER!!!! I don't really think of it as comedy per say. Yes, it has comic elements to it but it was very deep.
The others I chose were WKRP, The Jeffersons, Monty Python's Flying Circus & Rowen & Martin's Laugh-In.

Wow what a tough list to choose from! I had 10 easy contenders straight away...
Top 5... Three's Company, Good Times, George & Mildred, What's Happening, Eight Is Enough
Next 5... Love Boat, Brady Bunch, Diff'rent Strokes, One Day At A Time, The Jeffersons
Nice to see the inclusion of some UK television. I'd love to add stuff like Mind Your Language and Are You Being Served? to it too.

I went with
MTM
AIF
Taxi
ODaaT
and
OTHER.....for Facts of Life - which may be an 80s show but it got it's start in 1979 :P :P :P
I disagree with Eight is Enough being on the list... I loved the show but I wouldn't classify it as a comedy.

I probably should've asked if you meant then or now...
when I was a kid I hated AIF but I love it now I think it's an incredibly deep show.
I hated MASH then and I kind of still do- could never get past the laugh track...but now that I know the DVDs have the option to watch without the canned laughter I may give it another try.
then my faves were Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, WKRP and Love Boat
Brady bunch is on the list but not in the top 5...maybe in the top 10 of both lists tho.

I've seen some episodes of "Are you being served" but am not familiar with "Mind your language".

If/when I create an 80s comedy thread, TFOL will be there. Eight is enough had elements of drama and comedy, you could argue either way whether it belongs here or not. I put it here, so it's here. :P ;)

Yes....

I liked the first season of fol so I stand by my other! :P
I stand by my opinion of EIE (tho I loved the show :) )
And so which is it. How you felt then or now?

No problem at all, that's why the "other" category is there.

When I posted that, I never gave it any thought (then ...or now).
I'd say now. I look at shows like "Happy Days" in particular, and it just isn't as funny as it used to be (for me), whereas MASH still is funny, maybe even more so.

I used to watch Mind Your Language. It was about an English class for adults from other countries. They tried to bring it to the U.S. under the name of "What a Country" starring Yakov Smirnoff but it was basically 8-P and died very quickly.
Another Britcoms that I used to watch were Butterflies & The Good Life (or Good Neighbors as it was called in the U.S.)

I voted for SOAP, "Three's Company", "MASH", "The Brady Bunch" & "All in the family"
If I had to vote "back then" I would have included "Laverne and Shirley" or "Happy Days" in my top 5 and disposed of "Three's Company".
I find "Three's Company" still very funny today, but not so much the other 2 listed above.

Another short lived show was called When Things Were Rotten-about Robin Hood written by Mel Brooks (do I need to say anymore? :D ;D ;D ;D ). The thing is, a lot of the gags were used again in the movie Men in Tights.

I watched that, it had Dick Gauthier in it, I liked him from "Hymie" in Get Smart
Another short lived show I watched was "Lotsa Luck" with Dom Deluise.

Had to swap out a couple of classics for Python (because Python) and Laugh-In. Why Laugh-In? (And for the benefit of people who's first reaction is "What was Laugh-In?!)

And that's why people of a certain age kept watching You Can't Do That On Television all the way through college.

Laugh-in was a staple in my home. We never missed it.

I loved Three's Company, One Day at a Time, Happy Days, and several others, but my (still) all-time favorite is Bewitched. It started in the 60's but ran into the 70's. The fact that it started in the 60's must be why it wasn't on the list.
