Subject: Progressive rock.
Written By: warped on 11/09/12 at 2:22 pm
Progressive rock began in the late 1960s, but I created this thread in "The 1970s" because during the 1970s, Progressive rock was at it's best. :)
Bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull and Supertramp (to an extent) and others wrote some beautiful music during the 1970s.
What were you favorite progressive rock bands?
Favorite albums?
Favorite songs?

I love Jethro Tull. The Songs From The Wood album is probably my favorite of theirs. In my senior year of high school, I preformed a dance to Hunting Girl.

My favorite Pink Floyd album is "Dark side of the moon". It was on the charts for almost 750 weeks (15 years).
I love side 1, and "Time" is my favorite from that album.
I was glad they performed a few songs from that album when I saw them in concert in the mid 1980s.

The fact that you put Roxy Music in a Progressive Rock thread saddens me

Beautiful, isn't it? I'm not familiar with the 90 minute version here, but a 10 minute or so version.

I have this album:

One of my sister's friends had the album and I borrowed it when I was about 13 or so. Unlike SOME people, I knew I had to return it. As I was handing it back, I looked away and said, "Here-take it" almost in tears. The guy said, "You enjoy it so much, why don't you just keep it." :o :o :o :o I was in shock but also very grateful. Yes, I still have that same album that he gave me.

Rick Wakeman is excellent. What I know him best for was a project he did in the late 80s where he teamed up with his former Yes band members Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford and Steve Howe under the name Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe
That group's self-titled album produced a hit in 1989 called Brother of Mine that made it to #61 in Canada and #63 in the UK

Emerson, Lame & Palmer Brain salad surgery

Another album that was a 'must have' in junior high or high school. "Karn evil 9" was a fabulous musical piece. If you haven't heard it yet, give it a try.

I suppose the ultimate progressive rock album is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"

Here's a classic track from that album.

Believe it or not, you could (at a pinch) put ELO's first two albums in there...
(Okay, the first one is a bit indulgently whimsical, but the second certainly has prog-leanings...)

E.L.O was one of the bands I was tempted to add to my list ( which isn't a great list anyways, you can add many more bands to it) because of their early stuff. The Moody Blues was another band I could have added to that list, but not all the Moody Blues material belongs.

I think this album belongs-which is an outstanding album.

Another group that wasn't mentioned which I think should belong in this category is Alan Parsons Project. I love THIS one:

Good band. They were certainly prog rock.
Perhaps their most famous album during the 70s decade was "I Robot". Here is a cut from that album.
