Subject: Women's fashion of the mid-late '70s
Written By: amjikloviet on 08/11/12 at 1:57 pm
Are there any good sites about vintage mid to late '70s fashion? I have tried to search in images but only came up with pictures of celebrities dressed in '70s clothing and stills of That 70s Show ? lol. It isn't the same. I want to see real vintage pictures and was wondering if some of you could help. What was fashion really like back then? I want to focus on that particular time, particularly 1976-1979, because I am curious to know how women my age really dressed in those days right before I was born. I saw pics of my mother when she was a teenager in the '70s, but I know there were more trends I haven't seen.
Jessica.

You can try to watch clips on youtube from popular TV shows back in that time (1976 to 1979). Try searching for "Charlie's Angels" or "Three's company", "WKRP" (just ingore what Herb Tarlek was wearing), "One day at a time", "Eight is enough", "SOAP" or search for images from popular shows during that time. Watched all these as a teenager and I seem to recall they reflected the fashion at the time.
Or
Look at movies during that time period , like "Annie Hall", Kramer Vs Kramer", "Goodbye girl" . Maybe you can find images on the net or youtube videos.

What I wore back then is pretty much what I wear now-blue jeans & a tee shirt.

Another couple of shows to examine are American Bandstand and Soul Train episodes from that timeframe - the dancers on these shows were regular folks, and although some chose slightly over the top fashions, for the most part they wore what was popular at the time. A couple of examples:
This Soul Train clip is from early 1977

This American Bandstand clip is from January 1980

I watched the two clips and must have said, "I had a shirt like that", or "I had those pants", or "I had that sweater" too many times to mention.

Agreed, That Girl was one of my most favorite shows when I was age 10 ::) (That would be 1970.) The "Hot Pants" look is also from around that time period, 1970 to 72. That fashion trend was basically done by '73.

True about fur - it was quite popular for women in the late 70's (pre-PETA). Rabbit fur like this was considered an 'entry level' fur, as it was more affordable than most other types (this particular coat appears of higher than average quality). Thus we of meager means ( ::) ) often had rabbit fur for our "dress" coats:

I talked to one young man at a PETA rally in Boston who was wearing a leather jacket while protesting fur. I pointed out the obvious hypocrisy. He explained that leather was okay because "they just, like, shave the cow."

Oddly in a lot of ways 70s fashion looks more modern than 80s fashion. I guess because so much of it came back in the 90s and is still with us.

I had a coat just like this one, received it for Christmas when I was 8 or 9-I loved it and my G'ma called it my 'coat of many colors' ;D ;D ;D
Although I don't think mine was quite as plush as this one, and it was more jacket length.

That was like my sisters-more of a jacket. I always wanted one but never did. :\'( :\'( :\'( I was a deprived child. :\'( :\'( :\'( :D ;D ;D ;D
Actually, as an adult, I bought myself a fur coat (not like this one-just one color-I think it is fox). When I bought it, fur was already a major faux pas but I always wanted one so I bought it anyway. It now sits in my closet because I'm afraid to wear it. :-\\ Besides, it sheds a lot.

It's a shame to have a coat you always wanted but never get to wear it! I would pair my jacket with a knitted newsboy cap and scarf and feel I was the height of fashion and quite grown-up.
In the summertime, late 70s I loved halter tops. This one is close, but mine was a little girl version, so no plunging neckline:
http://img3.etsystatic.com/000/0/5488586/il_570xN.142476067.jpg
Loved the bandana halter top, had them in blue and red. I was not allowed to wear them anywhere but for 'play'. Not to the store, church, etc. :( They were sooo comfortable, halter tops.

Big afros for women were more popular earlier in the decade, like 1971 to 1975. I started college in fall 1977. I always noticed women's fashion among peers 'cause that's how I rolled: big afros were relatively rare among women by then, although there were a few.
On the other hand, that multi-colored rabbit coat screams 1979!! ;D

He's like the uncle I always wished I had! (SO I could steal his clothes!)
I missed the 70s the first go around, but I distinctly remember the revival in the 90s and how crazy all my peers and I looked. I very vividly remember a navy and white sweater vest, a white blouse, flared legged blue jeans and black platform loafers that left a blister on my heel. I couldn't spent an entire decade in that garb. I just couldn't.
Not even if you dropped a young Michael Jackson, Donny Osmond and a stack of Liberace furs on my front lawn. LOL.
