Subject: CANCON - Canadian Music of the 70s
Written By: whistledog on 08/08/12 at 9:55 pm
Thought I'd begin this topic with one I bet you didn't know was Canadian ...
It's the 1972 live version of 'Conquistador' by Procol Harum. This version, which reached #10 in Canada, #16 in the US and #22 in the UK, was recorded in Alberta with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra making Procol Harum the first ever British group to qualify for Canadian Content through the Artist category. I like the original 1967 version, but the orchestra in this version makes it sound so much better.

2 Cancon's from the 1970s. Both from the band Chilliwack. This band hit the charts in Canada during the 1960s ( as the Collectors), and in the 1970 and 1980s as Chillwack.

I love how the 'Never Be the Same' one has a picture of Jessica Alba lol
Did you know 'Arms of Mary' is a cover song? For the longest time, I was not aware. The original was in 1976 by a British group called Sutherland Brothers and Quiver
My all-time favourite song of the 1970s is a Canadian song from 1978. It is called 'Sweet Misery' by a group called Teaze. It never reached the Top 40, but was the only chart single that Teaze had, yet somehow they released a total of 5 albums. This was a radio favourite. I still sometimes hear it on classic rock stations ...

Sure, I know the song. I did hear it on AM radio back in 1978. It was played often enough that I recognized it. It's a very good song.
What's my all-time favorite Canadian song from the 70s?
Difficult to say, but I do know these 3 are in my top 10.

Carry Me! Best Stampeders song ever!!!!!!! Such a great song to sing along to.
Other ones are great also! I listen to Gary and Dave all the time. I have one of their cassette tapes from the 70s, but dang thing is so old, it no longer works. I keep it just for the historical value

Here's a pair of hits from 1976 ...
Deja Vu - Dance
One of the members of this band was Cal Dodd who is best remembered as co-host of a show called Circus on CTV that aired from 1978-1985
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRaIC1Hi90A
Liverpool - Dolly
Dolly was produced by Ian Thomas. In 1978, Liverpool changed their name to Aerial, and after two albums under that name, lead singer Gary O'Connor (known simply as Gary O') went solo in 1981 and had a few hits, most notably the radio favourite 'Shades of 45' in 1984

... Here is Aerial's 1978 hit 'Easy Love'. It reached #92 in Canada

3 good songs there...
My memory tells me that "Easy love" received the most radio play out of the 3 (I heard it more often, maybe), but it charted poorest of the three.
(while do I feel you and I are the only two on inthe00s who know these nice tunes)

It's usually the lowest charting ones that are better remembered. These songs never made it out of Canada. The rest of the world sure missed out

^ Best Ian Thomas song of the 70s. I almost picked that as my favourite Ian song, but his original version of 'Hold On' is just so fantastic.
That Ken Tobias song is the one that I hear the most. I also hear his song 'Give a Little Love' quite a bit. Ken Tobias' biggest success was as a songwriter on 'Stay Awhile' by The Bells

Cano never really took off. They had one other hit in 1980 with a cover of the Cliff Richard song 'Carrie', which I remember, but I don't know if I remember their version of the Cliff version as they were both hits in 1980 lol
Speaking of cover songs, here's one of the greatest Canadian cover versions of the 70s ...
Long John Baldry featuring Kathi McDonald - You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling (1979)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8wQxs0M_1Q
The interesting part is that the British born Long John Baldry is was only Canadian by citizenship (Kathi McDonald is American). He moved to Canada in 1978, and became a Canadian Citizen just shortly before he recorded the Baldry's Out album in 1979.
Baldry's Out peaked at #59 in Canada and was his only charting album as a Canadian citizen. He had previously charted in 1972 with the album Everything Stops For Tea which made it to #85 in Canada. Baldry's Out also had a 3rd hit with a cover of the Russ Ballard tune Come and Get Your Love but that one seems to be absent from YouTube

Chalawa are a reggae band from Toronto area, originally founded to backup other artists. But the success of their own material soon prompted them to take center stage themselves.
"Hop, Skip And Jump" was a hit in parts of Europe, but I don't think it did much in Canada.

I know I've posted this before, but not in this thread, so...
Chalawa - Hop, Skip And Jump (1979)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eno7KkJeiAw
Chalawa are a reggae band from Toronto area, originally founded to backup other artists. But the success of their own material soon prompted them to take center stage themselves.
"Hop, Skip And Jump" was a hit in parts of Europe, but I don't think it did much in Canada.
You did post that one before, but it is still a good song. Can't say as I knew of it before that, but it's a good song!

That is a good one. England Dan and John Ford Coley did a cover of that and charted in the US with it. Always thought that was cool as Jackson Hawke never charted in the US. Americans looking to Canada for inspiration.

I used to think Jackson Hawke was one man until I saw an album cover.
"That Jackson Hawke guy is a great singer. Just like that Jethro Tull guy and that Steely Dan fellow"
My favourite is still 'Into the Mystic'. I'm so used to it, that the Van Morrisson original sounds dull and bland (but it is still a good one)

Prism was at their peak when they released "Armageddon". Not too many albums were more popular in Toronto than that album, during that time period.

Bush - I Can Hear You Calling
This band consisted of the late great Domenic Troiano and vocalist Roy Kenner, and was one of many projects the two would do together. In the 90s, long after they called it quits, Bush gained media attention over rights to the band name. Because Troiano still owned the rights to the name in Canada, the British alt-rock band Bush (fronted by Gavin Rossdale) released their albums in Canada as Bushx. Rossdale and Troiano soon came to an agreement, and future Bushx albums/singles were released in Canada as Bush

Speaking of Abraham's Children, the album pictured in the video above is called Time. It was released in 1974 and was the only album that Abraham's Children ever released, and the song Goddess of Nature wasn't even on it. That song was released as a teaser for the band's second album which never emerged because they parted ways due to musical differences and conflicts with their management and label before full recording could begin. The 4 hits they had all made the Canadian Top 40 and the album itself reached #35. Not bad for only 1 album. I think I still like Goddess of Nature the best

Those excellent Songbird releases above were on the Vancouver based label Mushroom Records, a label known for being responsible for the first 2 albums by Heart (Dreamboat Annie in 1976 and Magazine in 1977). The label was a subsidary of Capitol Records and existed from 1974-1980. They were also responsible for 3 albums by Chilliwack (Dreams, Dreams, Dreams in 1977, Lights From the Valley in 1978 and Breakdown in Paradise in 1979) and the 1975 self-titled album by R&B singer Jayson Hoover

The categories in which the music qualifies as CANCON are black with a white initial. That means the Music, Artist, Production, Lyrics were all done in Canada. This Alabama group is a Canadian artist.

Other ones are great also! I listen to Gary and Dave all the time. I have one of their cassette tapes from the 70s, but dang thing is so old, it no longer works. I keep it just for the historical value
Love the Stampeders! Grew up listening to their records while cleaning house with my Mom. They originally came from Calgary, as did she. Later, I met my husband who was born and raised in Dawson Creek, BC. The drummer Kim Berly(Meyer) was also a Dawson native. The Stampeders would come to Dawson Creek every Hallowe'en for several years and put on a concert. Our pharmacist is related to Rich Dodson.

If I remember correctly from countless research of the CHUM chart, this well loved song was in the CHUM Top 30, but never made the Mainstream 100 Singles chart ...
Prism - See Forever Eyes (1978)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrvkcgU15WI
Speaking of Prism, I do remember their Bryan Adams/Jim Vallance penned hit Cover Girl did make the CHUM chart in 1980, but never made the mainstream 100 Singles chart. I'd post a clip of the song, but all the videos I can find of it on YouTube feature naked photos of the late Dorothy Stratten. Kind of makes sense though as the song was written about her
I often wonder if K-Tel record compilations factored in the CHUM charts for their "hits" as I have one called High Voltage that has Cover Girl on it.
http://www.discogs.com/Various-High-Voltage/release/1744009
I also have one from 1980 called Power Play which featured the Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club version of Video Killed The Radio Star which did make the CHUM chart, but was not seen at all in the mainstream 100 Singles chart

I remember those albums. I've listened to High Voltage before.
" See Forever Eyes " was a popular song in Toronto. Yup. Hard to understand why it didn't make the Mainstream 100 Singles charts.
I know this question fits into 1980, but a good place to ask it. "The Monks" were very popular in Ontario when they released their "Bad Habits" album, but not so much anywhere else in Canada. I bet their songs fared much better in Southern Ontario charts than the Canadian Mainstream 100 Singles charts. I can recall 5 songs from that album that I heard on CHUM-AM.

I remember those albums. I've listened to High Voltage before.
" See Forever Eyes " was a popular song in Toronto. Yup. Hard to understand why it didn't make the Mainstream 100 Singles charts.

Local playlists would have been better suited for The Monks. When I hear how popular they were, seeing that one chart placing for Drugs in My Pocket just doesn't make sense

The other Monks songs I mentioned might not have made the top 40, but the did get lost of radio play. Such a good album.
