Subject: Psychedelic disco
Written By: Emman on 03/30/12 at 7:39 pm
I'm sure some know about psychedelic soul from the late '60s/early '70s but there was some psychedelic spillover into the late '70s, including some influences on disco music. Here's some songs I would classify as groovy psychedelic disco, far out man. 8)

Actually I wasn't born that generation and grow up in that generation. But I can see it from my relatives. They treated it as kind of fashion.

I have a feeling Jimi Hendrix would have been doing music in the Funkadelic vein had he lived and continued making music throughout the '70s.
I think they picked up where he left off. 8)

A good topic, but I must say the term referring to the style you have exampled is FUNK.
Not “Psychedelic disco”.
And calling it disco is an affront to aficionados of funk music. No offense but disco (I like most disco and went to disco nights to boogie in the 90’s BTW) but Funk is NOT Disco, please do not confuse the two.
The term Psychedelic has been used too often to describe music that is often experimental in vein.
For example Funkadelic was a very experimental band, a lot of the tracks were overdubbed redubbed and completely off the wall. But they were funky they had a specific bass line locked into the drums to form a groove. Colorful music to say the least, but not really psychedelic as I would to compare to say The Temptations “Cloud Nine”, which is definitely psychedelic soul (but not disco). Disco was a complete syncopation, 3-4 beat recycled over and over type of thing and you can find the same beat in each disco song, not so with funk.
Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, Sly Stone, Mandrill were all out FUNK, no question.
Personally calling funk, or bands like Funkadelic, Ohio Players “disco”, would get a big frown from a Funk connoisseur…Disco is disco but funk is FUNK, if you don’t know the difference then get the funk out of here… ;)

Funk is a first cousin of Disco.

I was probably linking songs in the disco era that had a heavy influence of the acid rock variety of psychedelica(mainly Jimi Hendrix), I think there is a lot of overlap between the two but funk does have more complex rhythms whereas disco is defined by it's steady four on the floor beat.

Funk is a first cousin of Disco.
Well, you are right. Kissing cousins, but I wouldn't want to see them kiss...
Disco is great fun. For what it was when it was. I LIKE disco. But, funk, is so much more than just fun and a dance beat. It does have elements of soul/R&B and dance (disco if you will). Its dark, its, guttural, its alive. It doesn't wait for beats to move it, it grows, morphs into something else and moves on. It smells, its FuNky! Not so much that disco is fake (kind of or maybe like some of the atmosphere it generated), but Funk is so much more real.
Listen to a JB's track and hear them twist and change the groove, they have 11 mins or longer takes/tracks just like this and part of the beat & bass line actually change and yet they still keep the same groove and keep it funky.

Disco is great but even a extended 12" disco track (of '70s vintage) didn't really do much but extend the song and possibly remix or remove vocals.
Sorry for getting off-topic, but I'm totally biased on the subject (obviously) and have been for years. I believe funk (right before rap) was one of the last real American home grown genres in music and is not nearly appreciated enough for what it is, where it came from and where it fits into the scheme of music hierarchy. I'm not even going to mention some of the great funk artists that have been overlooked/unappreciated and how much funk influenced almost every part of music that came about thereafter (whoops I did mention it). ::)

You are right, there is a lot of overlap and there are some soul/r&b bands that definitely had some psychedelic influences to them. If I wanted to add one that was psychedelic soul, Latin soul or r&b or something of a combo of those (but not disco) it would be the band WAR.

Additionally, I think that early on, at least, Sly & Family Stone was very trippy in their arrangements too.

Dammit, these guys were playing 2 weeks ago (under the name The Lowrider Band, since they're no longer allowed to use the name War anymore for some legal reason) at Knuckleheads, which is a blues bar with a kickass outdoor stage here in KC and I just happened to pick that weekend to go back to Nebraska to see my folks. I was just heading out of town when I heard them talking about it on the community radio station and I actually thought about turning back.
I have no doubt in my mind that it would have been a killer show. :-\\
