Game shows were at their peak in the '70s on daytime, and there were lots (some still around today in an updated form:)
-The Price is Right with a dark-haired Bob Barker, and only a half hour its first few years
-Match Game '7X
-Richard Dawson Family Feud
-The $10,000/$20,000 Pyramid
-Wheel of Fortune with Chuck Woolery and Susan Sarandon
-Tattletales
Soap Operas were also at their high point in the '70s:
-The Young and the Restless
-Love of Life
-Search for Tomorrow
-Another World
Others of Note:
-Marcus Welby, M.D. was huge early in the '70s
-The Waltons
-Sanford and Son
-Charlie's Angels, of course (until Farrah Fawcett left)
-Monday Night Football from this era had some really good commentators
-ABC's Wide World of Sports. Before ESPN, this was the place to see second-hand sports.

"Toma" was my favorite cop show of the 70s. Tony Musante starred as the real-life detective Dave Toma (who did a cameo in almost every episode) known for wearing disguises on the job and trying to resolve situations without having to use his gun. It had a great electric guitar score and was a forerunner to most of the gritty, realistic cop shows to follow. Toma's boss was played by the great Simon Oakland and Susan Strasberg playe his wife. When Musante left the show, he was replaced by Robert Blake and the character morphed into "Baretta."

I always thought Toma ('73-'74) and Baretta ('75-'78) were two different shows. I guess you're correct. Found this on imdb:
When Tony Musante agreed to do the series, he refused to commit to more than one full season. He would continue in the role only if the second season was shortened to ten episodes or six 90-minute Movie of the Week episodes. The producers were sure that Musante would change his mind and return for a full second season. So they agreed to the unusual contract. But when the producers tried to renegotiate with Musante after the first season, he still refused and quit the series. The producers wanted Robert Blake to take over the role. But when Blake balked at taking over an established role, the series was retooled as Baretta.

I remember Toma.
One of my favorite shows of the time was the Magician starring Bill Bixby. It wasn't long lived but man, did I love that show. And anyone who knows me will know why. ;) :D ;D ;D ;D

He was my major hearttrob. Where every girl I knew went after David Cassidy or Donny Osmond, I went after Bill Bixby. I cried when I heard that he died. :\'( :\'( :\'( :\'(
He hosted a short lived series on PBS called Once Upon A Classic.

Hawaii Five O (1968 - 1980)
I love and still love Hawaii Five O.
Something about McGarrett and that show that was both fascinating and also soo campy/cheesy. Its the quintessential cop show of the '70's IMO.
Heres one that I love and think is sorely missed: WKRP In Cincinnati.
Great, funny show (who can forget the Thanksgiving Day "Turkey Bombing" episode?) that actually had the current music of the time playing in the background.
Too bad the DVD releases of the TV show have none of the original music on it, all dubbed over as they were too cheap to pay for the music rights to have it on the DVD's. :(

Hi; The 70s had some really fabulous tv series.A Lot were named above but i think my top favorite of all was " Kojak" . Many big actors and actresses such as James woods,Armand Assante,Richard Gere,Linda Hamil,Harvey Keitel ect. Lots of really fine actors all had parts in different episodes when they were just starting out.And the filming all over NYC.Well written and great acting.A very great Police Detective and Drama show.

:)My favorites were: McMillan & Wife, Price is Right, and Hee Haw. In fact, when I find Hee Haw on youtube, I still laugh!
On date night, I remember my parents always watching the Lawrence Welk show, and how embarrased I was, by that. ::)

Yeah, it was a good program.
As for game shows, Match Game in its original run readily comes to mind, as well as Family Feud in its original incarnation with Richard Dawson. GSN used to run those shows regularly, but not so much these days.

RIP, Dick Clark.
http://i.imgur.com/SMhLJ.jpg
And thanks for hosting the $10,000 and $20,000 Pyramid from 1973-1988, then Bill Cullen had a $25,000 syndicated show from 1974-1979, Dick Clark had the "New" $25,000 pyramid for a few more years, apparently there was a $50,000 Pyramid, by 1991 and John Davidson it was a $100,000 Pyramid, and it ended up as just "Pyramid" when Donny Osmond took over and even the TV executives couldn't keep track of four decades of slow but steady inflation.

To balance things up, I'll give you a British slant on things...
Comedy:
Steptoe & Son
On The Buses
(The very controversial) Love Thy Neighbour
Are You Being Served
The Benny Hill Show
Variety:
Miss World (various years)
Royal Variety Performance (ditto)
Opportunity Knocks (talent show)
This Is Your Life (or as Eamonn would say 'Thass Is Yore Loife')
Police shows: (and here we go from one extreme to the other)
Dixon Of Dock Green (genteel as they come)
Starsky & Hutch (somewhere in the middle)
The Sweeney (shocked even the real police at the time!)
Drama:
Colditz
Edward & Mrs Simpson
Upstairs Downstairs
Game shows:
Sale Of The Century
Generation Game
Blankety Blank
However, note that there's no place for either Monty Python or Fawlty Towers, which are regularly installed at the top of TV critics' lists...they couldn't have had a fantastically huge audience at the time!

The last two series of Steptoe and Son (the one that were recorded in colour) are in my opinion the best comedy from the writers Galton and Simpson.

WKRP is one of my favorites. The scripts were funny by themselves, but the actors made them even funnier. The one where Johnny Fever took an on the air sobriety test from a cop was my favorite. The more vodka Johnny drank, the better his reaction time was; and the drunker Venus became.
