Subject: 1970s James Bond movies (The Connery/Moore era)
Written By: Ryan112390 on 12/15/11 at 2:16 pm
How do you feel about the '70 Bond era...A time when James Bond films were probably at their silliest and also (imho) most fun. We started off the '70s with Sean Connery back in the role in Diamonds are Forever and ended it with Roger Moore in Moonraker.
I know a lot of people dislike Diamonds are Forever, but for me it's simply a fun, awesome movie--Something not to be taken seriously but just to be enjoyed for the ride.
Connery:
Diamonds are Forever (1971)
Moore:
Live and Let Die (1973)
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Moonraker (1979)

Agreed, Diamonds are Forever was a fun Bond movie, but to class The Spy Who Loved Me and
Moonraker as Bond movies is an insult to the Bond movie industry, for these to film were utter trite and not worth watching.

I've never watched a non Connery Bond movie. Just can't see anyone else in the roll.

Moonraker is in fact my favorite ever Bond movie (and in fact one of my favorite movies ever) but that's because it actually WASn't a Bond movie. It was more like a part screwball romcom, part star-wars/space-1999-style space opera. (One of the reasons the Austin Powers franchise never did much for me is that I felt the genre had already been satirized, and better, by "Moonraker," and Austin Powers just made the satire overt and threw in a lot of product placements.)
Actual proper Bond movies bore the tar out of me. And I'm including Diamonds Are Forever, Goldfinger, Dr. No, all the alleged greats. Sorry, but those movies are BORING. I have a theory that the whole franchise is basically for the ladies, who like to go gaga over Connery et al.... Or for people who just dug ritzy things, it was a bit like window-shopping at Neiman-Marcus or The Sharper Image. But as action movies, psychological dramas, political thrillers, or anything of the like, the classic bonds leave me cold.
I did, however, really enjoy the Casino Royale remake. But it went the opposite direction of Moonraker, it was totally dead serious, which i thought was cool. The connery classics were too smug to be funny but didn't take themselves seriously enough for anyone else to take them seriously.
I also sorta liked Live and Let Die, for the great theme song and also because of its whole blaxploitation angle. Other than those few, meh.

The Connery movies are dated, when they first came out(1962) they were the rage, first because Connery was so smooth and good looking, then they had all these unbelievable gadgets, I mean can you imagine... carphones!

As i remember, when i was a kid i loved the trinkets -- even had a toy Goldfinger car and a toy Spy Who Loved Me car -- but still didn't like the movies. I think if you'd asked me when i was eight i would have SAID i liked the movies, because it just hadn't occurred to me that you *could* dislike james bond movies, but when i think of the actual experience of watching them, i remember being bored and thinking how odd it was that i was bored watching a james bond movie. I think another part of it is that as action movies, they're not really that fun because bond is basically indestructible, so there's no real tension. same reason why i really like harrison ford or bruce willis action movies, but not so much jason statham movies. Ford and Willis have this knack for acting like they're just a half-step of getting their ass handed to them, but you never once worry whether anything bad is going to happen to jason Statham.
i'm really confronting my feelings about james bond! i've never really liked the movies, but until now i've not admitted it, even to myself. i'm making progress!

My favorite James Bond movie is Live & Let Die because of it was the first JB movie I ever saw. I actually saw it at the theatre. :o

I had the same experience with Moonraker. The critics were scoffing about how inferior it was. Yeah, WTF were the other Bond movies? Shakespeare?
The seventies was a decade of car chase flicks and Inspector Clouseau. Moonraker fits in seamlessly. And you gotta love Richard Kiel!
