Subject: '70s things that never made a comeback (and probably never will)
Written By: yelimsexa on 10/18/11 at 2:00 pm
Similar to the '80s thread, post some things you remember (if you were alive then) or have only seen deep in the memory lane archives that from the '70s never really left that increasingly far out from the present decade.
I'll start by including:
-Hidden headlamps on nice cars
-Rectangular headlamps and opera windows
-8-track tapes
-IBM Selectric typewriters
-Cartoons based off of primetime shows

Now they have live action movies based off of cartoons (not to mention prime time shows). ::)

decent music. BUT I KID!!!
casual drinking and driving. smoking on airplanes and at your desk. sexist coffee commercials. cigarette commercials. slot cars. demolition derbys. space operas using miniatures for special effects. matte paintings. plinky-ploonky synthesizers. (sorry, max!) monster movie marathons on local t.v. stations with great names like "Chiller Theater." zeitgeist-altering novels like "the godfather" and "gravity's rainbow." mainstream acceptance of the idea that oswald didn't act alone. incredibly huge rockets.
some good stuff, some bad stuff, but what i'll really miss are the space operas and the monster movies.

also, TV dinners with aluminum foil trays and covers, from before the microwave became affordable.
also, mello-trons, except as a sort of specialty item.

Round headlights on cars.
Mutton chop sideburns on men.
Frilly tuxedo shirts/other out there '70s fashion staples (excluding bell bottoms and platforms which have come back once in a while)

Round headlights on cars.
There's this thing called the Volkswagon New Beetle (original came out well before '70s) that has round headlights, plus you see them in the movie Cars.

I remember those. I used to burn everytime trying to remove the foil

Taking 15 minutes on average to board an airplane, with just a quick walk through along with an airline meal.

they were good though! everything tastes better when oven-cooked instead of nuked. they have conventional oven instructions on these new-fangled TV dinners but that scares me because the trays are plastic.

They were very good. The foil acted as a better cooking surface and made the food taste like it just came off the grill. The plastic ones today leave that fake taste

i totally agree! i wish they still sold at least a couple lines of the old-school TV dinners for oldsters like me the way they still sell the old-school aluminum popcorn poppers alongside the microwave bag ones. i guess i'll never get to eat a foil TV dinner again. so weird the things you miss.

My friend's dad had one of these. We found it in his tool shed and pieced it together in record time!

Black and White TV.
Not seventies per se, but in the seventies you didn't assume everybody had color TV. That didn't really happen until the early to mid eighties.

The Super Bad Party Ring {1976}
This commercial was played locally in Atlanta GA on WTCG channel 17, later changed to WTBS Super Station 17
This is the second version. The original version {circa 1973} had a white woman dancing with an African-American gentleman at the beginning of the commercial. A couple of people that worked at Turner told me that death threats were called in from some viewers that did not like an African-Amercian man dancing with a white woman. The video was then edited to remove the white woman and show a picture of the ring instead.

I had to look up "opera window." I didn't know they were called that. Miserable little rear windows you couldn't open in the summer!

Rotary dial phones.
We have one in our basement (left by previous owner) wall mounted with a long cord. It still works great. It's nice when I'm doing laundry and the phone rings because I don't have to run upstairs to answer.

1.Streets covered in rubber! Smokey burnouts and the smell of rubber in the air! In the 70's people accepted people doing big smokey burnouts (at least they did in my neighborhood). It was normal for people to work on their cars in their driveways.
2. Paperboys and having to collect for the paper(now prepay via mail)and papercarts(now cars) paper shacks.
3. Dirtweed
4. Dogs roaming the streets
5. Streakers (likely if caught would have to register as a sex offender)
6. Cheap musclecars
7. Neighbors that gave the feeling of living in a community willing to help eachother and look out for eachother while giving the privacy we are allowed.
8. Christmas vacation (now winter break)

I remember going with my brother to collect the money for his route. Today kids cannot have paper routes anymore; it's adults only.

And movie theaters, airplanes, and grocery stores.
I was working in a grocery store when they passed the smoking ban in Massachusetts. You'd say: "Excuse me, sir, state law now prohibits smoking in public buildings." The guy would throw the butt down on the floor at stomp it out at your feet. Customers would actually be mad at me about it. I don't make the laws, jeez! Nowadays it doesn't cross a person's made time blaze up in the supermarket.
