Subject: Procol Harum - Conquistador
Written By: whistledog on 06/06/10 at 9:21 am
'Conquistador' is a 1972 song by British group Procol Harum. It was recorded in Alberta with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, making it one of the rare times when a British band met Canadian Content qualifications as a Canadian artist. The song reached #22 in the UK, #18 in the United States and #7 in Canada
I hear this song quite frequently on the classic hits station I listen to, and I never get tired of it. One of the all time greats of the 70s, I thought it needed it's own thread!

Awesome song! ;)
Agreed. I always loved it ever since I first heard it back in 1972. 8)
Interesting - it was unusual for a live recording to become a top 40 hit at that time, plus the song's distinctive sound, with a full orchestra. But that's part of its appeal. For any who remembers, 1972 was an unusual and transitional year in music; styles were pretty divergent, as if no one quite knew the 'direction' music was headed in. It was unlike the years before and after, when it was easier to characterize songs by style. But the diverse musical landscape of 1972 was replete with amazing musical gems - like Conquistador.
Good choice!
