Subject: The Bump – a 1970’s craze.
Written By: Henk on 05/09/10 at 9:47 am
Anyone remember the Bump? It was a primarily 1970s fad dance first introduced by Johnny Spruce wherein the main move of the dance is to lightly "bump" hips on every other main beat of the music. As the dance (and the evening) progressed, the bumping could become more intimate, bumping hip to backside, low bending, etc. It seems to me the Bump reached the peak of its popularity in 1975/1976, with various artists recording songs to go with the dance. They rarely managed to reach the international charts, though, with one noticeable exception:
Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman) – Joe Tex

But of course there were others, like these ones:
The Bump – Kenny

Bump Me Baby – Dooley Silverspoon

Lady Bump – Penny McLean

Baby Do You Wanna Bump – Boney M
(You have to crank up the volume for this one!)

Anyone got videos/comments to add? I’m curious…

Two more that you really need to hear…
The Big Bear Bump – Ronnie & The Big Bear
Dutch boy Ronnie (Latum) was only 13 years old at the time.
The voice of the Big Bear is created by Willem Duin, of Mouth & MacNeal fame.

I remember the dance, but I didn't know any of these songs! They're all so dated and funny to me. ;D

The one I really remember is The Bump by Kenny. I also recognised Ain't Gonna Bump No More.

I was only 8-9 years old "butt" I remember doing the bump, a.k.a. "the butt" back then. It was fun and funny at the same time. I don't think it was a national craze or fad, just fun.
Don't forget:
Jimmy Castor's - The Bertha Butt Boogie, a great "bump" song.

It went through a two-week burst of popularity, before people started to realise that it could lead to dislocated hips if performed a little exuberantly...
The most well-known example in Britain (Kenny's 'The Bump') started off as a Bay City Rollers 'B'-side!

Thank you very much for posting that song. I'm sure I've never heard it before, but now I finally know where Les Adams (aka L.A. Mix) got his sample! ;D ;)

The Bump - what a fun dance!
I liked it - it was easy to do, even for a nervous dancer like me.
It also tended to elicit a laugh... :)

There was a drawing made by a woman who rented an apartment we had on the back of our house. It was me & 3 of my sisters doing the bump and she entitled it "The ____ Bump" (with our last name.) I wonder if that drawing still exist or if it was lost to the ages. :(

I remember "Lady Bump" (had a good laugh) I do remember this dance getting a little too rough though, I think SLAM DANCING started from this! Ouch!
