Subject: Lou Reed's 'Metal Machine Music' album is now being hailed as work of genius
Written By: Satish on 04/17/10 at 3:25 pm
The album Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed from 1975 just consists of patternless guitar feedback that goes on for over an hour. Critics hated it and most listeners saw it as just meaningless noise. At the time, Lou Reed claimed it was a serious album, but most people thought he must have just intended it as a joke or as a way of fulfilling a contractual obligation.
But now, there's a bunch of people saying that Metal Machine Music was a daring, dangerous album that has inspired loads of acts since it came out. They claim that it's a landmark album in the development of avant garde music. Even Lou Reed himself is donning the emperor's new clothes and taking a band on the road to tour the album! Who would actually buy tickets to see them? ;D
I was just listening to a clip of Metal Machine Music on Youtube, and I don't know... I seem to find it enchanting and hypnotic, for some reason: :-\\

I think it's more a product of Reed's close association with the Velvet Underground/The Factory scene, including drone and minimalist composers such as LaMont Young and Tony Conrad. I am a big fan of ear-bleeding music from artists such as Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stokhausen, Muslimgauze, Merzbow, Einsurzende Neubauten, Pierre Henry, Sonic Youth, Luigi Nono, Helmut Lachenmann, and so forth. MMM just never did much for me, that's all.
Try this one, it'll blow your frikkin' mind:

The band Lou Reed formed in 2008 is called Metal Machine Trio. They play music that's inspired by MMM, so it doesn't sound exactly like the album. The band actually released a live album called The Creation of the Universe:
