Was looking at this picture of my grandpa (in the foreground with the black hair) and his brother, aged 53 and 61 at the time, from August 1973, and if you look at both of them, it seems they're plaiyng a game of some sort, and if you look at their otheir legs/feet, it seems they are both wearing ankle-high socks that come to just below the knee along with similar flat kind of shoes.

I'm wondering if ankle-to near knee high socks along with whatever kind of shoes they're wearing were part of some game or odd trend from the early-mid 70s? Or if it was just some old guy thing from back then?

It looks like they are throwing horseshoes. Over the calf or athletic socks were very popular in the 70's,
often they had colored stripes around the top. The over the calf sock is the only socks I'll wear; come
to think of it, over the calf socks and Chuck Taylor's, my style of dress hasn't changed in over 30 years.

The distance between the two men seems consistant with a horeshoe pit and the stance of your Grandpa's brother
is consistant with an aiming stance prior to tossing the shoe. Though I really can't see a shoe or pegs in the ground
but that could be because of the grainy picture, which was common of the time. Whatever it is he is tosing it under-
handed, either that or he is just giving him the finger.  ;D

Actually, in that photo, it kind of looks like a confrontation.  The dude furthest away (at the sidewalk) looks as if to say "You haven't seen the last of me"

Or it could be his property, and he's pointing at the man in the foreground, yelling to him "Keep off my property you bloody bastard"

Ankle high socks for men? Heck we had tube socks that (if you pulled enough) would go up over your head in the 1970's.

Almost every 8-14 yr old in shorts in the summer in my area had these god-awful tube socks with three/two strips (color matching the ugly running shorts if you were lucky) and emblazoned with an Adidas or Puma logo too...
