April 11, 1970: Apollo 13 is launched, but the mission would fail two days later, en route to the Moon, when a fault in the electrical system of one of the Service Module's oxygen tanks produced an overpressure rupture which caused a loss of electrical power and failure of both oxygen tanks.

The very same day, the Beatles' "Let It Be" peaked at #1 on the U.S. charts, one day after the Beatles announced their official breakup.

Wow - June 1971, what a time for me  :o

My family was in the process of a big move, away from ultra-urban Chicago off to a farm in rural Michigan.  I was between 6th and 7th grade, entering Junior High.  (I welcomed the move - I didn't care for the overcrowded Chicago public school that I had been in -  :-\\ - this had to be better, I thought.)  Life was in a personal upheaval for me.  But the music on the radio was awesome!

A few favorite songs of mine from that timeframe:

Doors - Love Her Madly
Honey Cone - Want Ads
Ringo Starr - It Don't Come Easy
Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds - Don't Pull Your Love
Carole King - It's Too Late
Chicago - Beginnings
Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (the Ecology)
Joe Cocker - High Time We Went
Jackson 5 - Never Can Say Goodbye
Paul Revere & Raiders - Indian Reservation
Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
Chase - Get It On
George Harrison - What Is Life
Santana - Oye Como Va
Paul McCartney - Another Day
Five Man Electrical Band - Signs

Deep Throat is the pseudonym given to the secret informant who provided information to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of The Washington Post in 1972 about the involvement of United States President Richard Nixon's administration in what came to be known as the Watergate scandal. Thirty-one years after Nixon's resignation and eleven years after Nixon's death, Deep Throat was revealed to be former Federal Bureau of Investigation Associate Director Mark Felt.

It's too bad that so many of those Canadian songs (especially out of the top 40), you can't find them on youtube. That's common though for many of the charts from the 1970s..Hard to find some CDN songs on youtube. Some are there, just have to look for it. But some are not.

Forty years ago, on Nov. 10, 1975, the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a ferocious storm on Lake Superior, killing all 29 men aboard.

The shipwreck was soon to be made famous in the haunting song by Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which was released the year after the sinking.

In the song, the disaster was blamed in part on the "Witch of November," which is the source of memorable and fierce storms on the Great Lakes.

September 1st 1976 - Wish You Were Here was close to spending one year on the UK chart. Pink Floyd’s ninth studio had been premiered at Knebworth in July 1975, and was released in September that year. It was an instant success, with record company EMI unable to press enough copies to satisfy demand. The artwork for the album package was once again created by the Hipgnosis team, who created a series of tableaux based on ‘absence’, including the empty gesture of a handshake between two US business men (one of whom is on fire), a diver that causes no ripples, and a piece of gauze floating in the wind, photographed somewhere in Norfolk, UK.

May 10th 1977 - Joan Crawford, American film and television actress, died at her New York apartment from a heart attack. She began her career as a dancer and stage showgirl. Crawford became one of Hollywood's most prominent movie stars and one of the highest-paid women in the United States, but her films began losing money and, by the end of the 1930s, she was labelled "box office poison". But her career gradually improved in the early 1940s, and she made a major comeback in 1945 by starring in Mildred Pierce, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She would go on to receive Best Actress nominations for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). Her year of birth is disputed.

Today marks one week since the 40th anniversary of Disco Demolition Night (12 July 1979), a promotion that went awry at Comiskey Park in Chicago Illinois, home of the Chicago White Sox. The idea was to blow up a whole bunch of disco records -- on the field -- but it resulted in the playing field getting damaged badly for that evening's nightcap to not get played. (The White Sox were supposed to host the Detroit Tigers for a doubleheader; the first game got played successfully... then came the DDN.)

This was the last time the Pittsburgh Pirates have won a postseason series, but it is not the most recent time they've advanced in the postseason. (In 2013 they won the NL Wildcard Game, which doesn't really count as a series per se because it is a single-game punchout.) Still, their most recent World Series title is the longest ago among any team that has won it all.
