Whilst the above songs were played in their entirety on the FM stations, the AM boys 'butchered' a lot of them in order to squeeze more songs on the airwaves per hour...

'Lyin' Eyes' by The Eagles was trimmed horrifically, thus ruining the 'story' element of the song...

And the hatchet job on Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' made no sense at all!  :P

The instrumental bit at the end of Layla by Derek and the Dominos is never played on the radio.

The instrumental bit at the end of Layla by Derek and the Dominos is never played on the radio.

It is in Canada, usually.

Regarding long songs, as a fan of &0's Pink Floyd and 70's Genesis, they haev LOTS and LOTS of long songs, if you like that type of music and genre.

Genesis's "the carpet crawl", "Ripples", "Cinema show" are 3 great songs
"Time" by Pink Floyd, a classic.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is 5:56

Oddly, at the time there was much consternation whether to release it as a single becuase of its length...

...yet at exactly the same time, 'Queen' Elton was releasing singles which regulary broke the 5+ minute barrier with no problem... ???

The 8:08 version of Donna Summer's "Last Dance", the one on the "Thank God It's Friday" soundtrack. This has always been my favorite mix of the song.

Or the long version of "I Feel Love."

Of course, once you get into disco mixes...

Let's see without going to TOOOO many prog rock jams and space rock ramblings...just some:

Tangerine Dream: Phaedra (17:00) 1974
Incredible String Band: Ithkos (19:30) 1974
Rush: The Fountain of Lamneth (20:00) 1975
Soft Machine: Moon in June (19:20) 1970
Robert Fripp and Brian Eno: Swastika Girls (18:45) 1973
Yes: The Ancient--Giants Under the Sun (18:40) 1973
Pink Floyd: Atom Heart Mother (23:45) 1970
Pink Floyd: Dogs (17:06) (1977)
Heldon/Richard Pinhas: Perspective VI (21:45) 1976
Frank Zappa: The Adventures of Gregory Peccary (20:40) 1978
Frank Zappa: Billy the Mountain (24:47) 1972

More songy songs:

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Free Bird (LP version) (09:10) 1973
Sugarhill Gang: Rappers Delight (12" version) (14:37) 1979
Neil Young: Ambulance Blues (08:57) 1974
Rolling Stones: Memory Motel (07:07) 1976
Pink Floyd: Us and Them (07:34) 1973
Pink Floyd: Welcome to the Machine (07:30)*
Frank Zappa: Willie the Pimp (09:16) **
Don McLean: American Pie (LP version) (08:11) (1971) +
Meatloaf: Paradise by the Dashboard Light (LP version) (08:48) 1977
Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven (08:02) 1971

* I didn't pick "Shine on You Crazy Diamond because it is divided into nine discrete parts
** True, it is 2/3 hard blues-rock instrumental, but it has a conventional song structure w/ lyrics and is a studio track, not a live jam
+ Usually cited as longest #1 song, but the version for radio play was under five minutes.

They always play it on radio stations in L.A. too! I know I've heard the whole thing on KLOS, a classic rock station, and KCBS-FM (aka "Jack fm"), which plays all kinds of pop and rock from the 60s thru today.

I really love the Jack FM format! We have it here too, KKJJ 100.5. I also listen to The Point KXPT 97.1. I don't think I've heard the full version of "Layla" on either station yet.

What I like about the Jack format is that they play a wide variety of stuff, and they don't have onair personalities talking all over the music. :)

Anyways...one that hasn't been mentioned yet is Creedence Clearwater Revival's cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (1970), which is a whopping eleven minutes long!! :o

Kraftwerk's 'Autobahn' guzzled up one side of a whole LP...

But unlike the similar hatchet job performed on Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells', the single edit worked nicely!
