Not so much tragic ending, than tragic why anyone bought the thing! :P
File alongside Bobby Goldsboro's 'Honey' (which somehow re-charted in Britain in the 70s) and Freddie Starr's 'It's You'...

Hello, This Is Joanie (The Telephone Answering Machine Song) - Cant remember who sings it now.
But the song is about a guy who argues with his girlfriend and she leaves his house and is killed in a car crash, and the only way for him to hear her voice is to ring her answering machine over and over again.

Sylvia's Mother- Dr Hook
Not really a tragic song, but when I was 11 or 12 years old listening to this, it made me sad that he couldn't talk to his girlfriend before she left town to marry a guy. I think it gave me a feeling of hopelessness (if there is such a word). Along with the operator cutting in, saying to deposit 40 cents more for the next 3 minutes. Also, her mother wasn't cooperating either, made it even worse. I'm sure we've all been there.

I DID check it out, Deb. Well thanks for the link :) ... interesting to see HIM do that one. However, I think he should stick to his own stuff ... as great as a singer / voice he has ... it didn't do it for me ... sounded too cabaret / going through the motions .. and I'd always have to vote for Don's original ... which is infinitely better than this (much as I'm a fan of Mr. J ).
Yeah ... if you can't match or better a song ... I think you should leave it alone ... unless you want to sully your rep. He has NO need to lower himself to inferior covers :-[ :(

Billy, Dont be a hero - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
Here's the excruciating lyrics, so sing along now! :o
Billy Don't Be A Hero
( Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods )
The marchin' band came down along Main Street
The soldier blues fell in behind
I looked across and there I saw Billy
Waiting to go and join the line
And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say
Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life
Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife
And as he started to go she said, Billy, keep your head low
Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me
The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried, We've got to hang on, boys!
We've got to hold this piece of ground
I need a volunteer to ride up
And bring us back some extra men
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Forgettin' all the words she said
She said
Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life
Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife
And as he started to go she said, Billy, keep your head low
Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me
I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw that letter away ...

And this, my Seventies Friends, goes down as THE worst song of ALL time! You heard it right: THE worst!
(Things get a little easier) Once you understand - by "Think"
Things get a little easier
Once you understand
Things get a little easier
Once you understand.....
I`ll be expecting you to
Get a haircut by Friday
(Forget it, Dad)
(That won`t change anything)
Forget nothing, you`ll do as I say
As long as you`re living in my house
He knows I`m not feeling well
And yet he doesn`t take one
Second out to help his mother
His only concern is for himself
(Come on, Ma)
(What do you want from me)
Don`t argue with your mother
Just shut up and listen
But, Mom, all my
Friends will be there
(I said, no, you can`t go)
But why
(I don`t want you
In that neighborhood)
Why, what`s wrong
With that neighborhood
(I don`t like the kind of
People living there)
Why, what`s wrong with them
(Nevermind)
(Some day, you`ll thank me)
Are you sure no one kept you
Company tonight while
You were babysitting
(What`s that supposed to mean)
Just curious
(Admit it, Mom, you don`t trust me)
Where are you going now
(To my friend`s house)
Don`t you have things
To do in the house
Don`t you have any homework
Why don`t you sit down
And read a book (oh, ma)
Don`t oh, Ma, me
You`re wasting your life
Away with the foolish things
(What are you talking about
How about your bridge club
And your ladies groups
And your parties and
Your daytime programs
What about all that)
That`s different
Ma, I`ll be home at eleven
(You better be home at ten or
Don`t bother to come home at all)
When I was your age
I was working twelve hours a day
Six days a week helping to pay
For the food and the rent
(I don`t understand, what`s
That got to do with me)
If you can`t figure that out
For yourself, you`re stupid
Hey, Dad
Did you see my new guitar
I joined a group
(Son, there`s a little bit more
To life than joining a group
And playing the guitar)
Yeah, Dad, what is there to life
Mister Cook (yes)
You have a son named Robert
Robert Cook, age seventeen (yes)
I`m sorry, Mister Cook
You better come down
To the station house
You son is dead (dead, how)
He died of an overdose (oh, God)

Here are the lyrics. Now that I see them I don't know where I got the idea of a game of fetch though. I guess someone told me. I hadn't heard that song since I was a child.
" ANOTHER DAY IS AT END
MAMA SAYS SHE'S TIRED AGAIN
NO ONE CAN EVEN BEGIN TO TELL HER
I HARDLY KNOW WHAT TO SAY
BUT MAYBE IT'S BETTER THAT WAY
IF PAPA WERE HERE I'M SURE HE'D TELL HER
SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE'S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA
SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY
MAYBE SHE'LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE
JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD
MAMA TRIES HARD TO PRETEND THINGS WILL GET
BETTER AGAIN
SOMEHOW SHE'S KEEPING IT ALL INSIDE HER
BUT FINALLY THE TEARS FILL OUR EYES
AND I KNOW THAT SOMEWHERE TONIGHT
SHE KNOWS HOW MUCH WE REALLY MISS HER
SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE'S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA
SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY
MAYBE SHE'LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE
JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD
JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD"

In the same kind of vein as 'Georgie' (although not as successful), 'Under One Roof' by The Rubettes...
