Subject: Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rogers?

Written By: Entouch on 04/29/08 at 8:30 pm

You know I like Buck Rogers better,(Gil Gerald could of stand to lose a few pounds)  even though I recall Battlestar had the hunks (Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict) I dont exactly remember when both of these series debuted in late 70s or early 80s but they both were popular due to Star Wars phenom. I think Buck Rogers was on NBC and Battlestar Galactida was on ABC. Its pretty outdated when you look at it now but still entertaining. ::)

I did have the opportunity to watch Battlestar so I have no opinion on it.  I loved Buck Rogers though. I was in love with Erin Gray as a kid.

For sci-fi I gotta go with Battlestar Galactica.  It did nicely between Star Wars flicks...

But dude, Erin Gray was my first porn..!

buck rogers was better. battlestar galactica kept showing the same dogfight footage over and over again -- i remember even when i was a kid that annoyed the heck out of me -- and it was sorta corny. i mean i know buck rogers was ten times cornier but it seemed to be doing it on purpose.

Even back then it sounds like you had an attraction to kitsch, Tia...

I know what you mean about the dogfight footage, I was aware of it too, but I think you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.  I was aware that it was a TV production as opposed to big screen and forgave on those grounds.  First of all, we all know that BG was a blatant Star Wars rip-off, but that, coupled with it's gigantic (for the time, which was also it's undoing) budget, gave the series big screen appeal.  More 'epic' as opposed to BR's claustrophobic feel.  Gil Gerrard never quite cut it for me anyway - no screen presence.  He was pretty bland.  Give me Dirk Bennedict, Richard Hatch and Lorne Greene any day...

Plus, the whole premise of the series - tying-in an extraterrestrial race of humans with the myths and trappings of ancient Egypt (think Stargate) was cool as all get out and provided me with something I could identify with and take home......

Having said that though, I was still glued to the toob for Buck Rogers and I remember watching the theatrical release, too...

you got me dead to rights on the kitsch factor davester ;D and you make a good argument about battlestar galactica's appeal. i liked it when i was a kid, just not as much as buck rogers. i LOVED buck rogers.

If it has Dirk Benedict, then it gets my vote.  He ruled my world for years....and the cigar smoking in the future?  Priceless.

Then he got cancer and had to go macrobiotic..BUT  for my entertainment dollar, it's BG for me.

Actually, Battlestar Galactica used the mythos behind Mormonism, not ancient Egypt, but your point still stands.

I enjoyed both shows, but it's 70s-Galactica by a nose for me.  Having thoroughly enjoyed the "re-imagined" Galactica, I got the box set of the 70s series last year and watched the entire series (hey, it's not like there were that many episodes!) over a long weekend.  First time I'd seen any of the material since it was first broadcast.

The material stands up.  As a child, it just seemed like a random string of space encounters (especially when you only got one episode a week), but as an adult (and when you're viewing the entire series in a weekend), it's clear they were trying to do story arcs about 15 years before ST:DS9 and Babylon 5 pulled it off.  They just didn't have the time/budget/network-support to pull it off.

I raise my glass to that poor Cylon who bravely banked off to the left, only to get blown away... three times in the same episode, and make that four times if you count the time where they mirror the screen left/right and he banks off to the right.  But for what it's worth, they did it in the movie too.

Now, on to more important things:  Serina, Athena, Cassieopeia or Colonel Deering?  The correct answer, of course, is E) All of the Above.  For pure numbers, Galactica had Buck beat six to two.

No, you're right.  I do recall the Mormon connection.  Makes it all the more intriguing...

Yep, I bought the set a couple of years ago and had the marathon.  It's a different show, watching it now...

And I bought the BG-1980 set, which I'd nearly forgot about.  I knew going into it that it is inferior, but I had to watch The Return of Starbuck...

You might be thinking of the book Chariots of the Gods? by Erich von Daniken, released in 1968:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_von_D%C3%A4niken

It held the view that beings from outer space visited Earth in ancient times and heavily influenced the development of ancient civilizations:

Personally, I think the theory's bunk, BTW.

i believe that was it, yes! there were a few others that were big, i think late great planet earth may have been one? and when did sitchens start writing, 12th planet and all that?

i'm not sure it was about truth or falseness so much as just being touchy feely. i vaguely remember those times and it seemed like a lot of people just dug on UFOs without necessarily believing them.

I gotta go with Battlestar Galactica

Anyone watch(ed) the new Battlestar Galactica?  Being a big Donnelly Rhodes fan, I should watch it, but I haven't seen it yet

I've only watched season one of the new BG.  Not bad.  I'm obliged to mention that the character switcheroos took some getting used to.  Edward James Olmos is always fun to watch, and as Cmdr. Adama he was perfect.  That guy's acting is so intense he makes me nervous, but in a good way...

The whole Baltar/Number Six thing got a bit tedious but it was central to the story (BTW Tricia Helfer -babe alert.  Grace Park - likewise but moreso)...

A sad and moving part was when the fleet had to jam, lightspeed style, and had no choice but to leave the slower ships behind because the Cylons appeared with nukes.  The ship with that little girl who had lost her parents...  OMG that was sad.  That's when I realized this definately wasn't the old show...

Are the other seasons as good..?

Due to my work situation and lack of tv at my digs in the late 70's, I never got to watch Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rogers?

All in all, it is Star Wars for me.

Ordinarily, I'd go with Battlestar Galactica, but...

80RJOZCtafg

...the 2011 reboot of Buck Rogers has me questioning that.

(And this board is a lot older than I thought, the original topic having appeared here in 2003, our history actually going all the way back to 1998.)
