Subject: Best TV/Music Variey Shows

Written By: Entouch on 04/17/08 at 10:06 pm

As you know variety shows ruled in the 70s. If you were famous singer or actor you had a variety show. I was still a kid in those years but I do remember the Sonny and Cher show. My mother tuned in just to see what type of dress she was wearing. Of course the Donny and Marie show was my favorite,  cheesy but still entertaining. My older brother said the worst tv variety show was a show starring two mimes. (dont remember that one) Like to know what were the best to you and the worst. :-*

I remember Donny and Marie and Sonny and Cher (I actually have more vivid memories of the one they did after they were divorced)
I used to love watching Hee Haw as a kid and enjoyed watching reruns of it in the 90s on the old TNN cable channel (The Nashville Network now known as Spike)

BTW even though it seems most people didn't care for the Brady Bunch variety hour from the clips I've seen of it it looked like a fun show.  :)

Shields and Yarnell. Another case of TV taking an act that is terrific in small doses and trying to make an entire series from it.

Was the Dean Martin variety hour from the 70's? That was a favorite of mine.

That was mid to late 60s maybe early 70s - I also remember those celebrity roasts he used to host every year.  :)

"Pink Lady & Jeff" is the worst, though I don't think it had mimes

I agree, It was so funny and Bob Mackie did the costumes for that show as well as Cher's.

I believe the Captain and Tenielle had a show as well didnt last long though. I wouldnt say it was the worst but they had to know the show was offered to them just because they had a hit record. :-*

I liked Carol Burnett and Sonny & Cher's shows.

These people also had TV shows in the 70s:
Glenn Campbell
Jim Stafford
Johnny Cash
Tony Orlando & Dawn
Tom Jones
