lol. i think i know why.
i remember dread zeppelin! i also used to have a tape called "the song retains the name," it was all led zeppelin covers by various artists. some of it was pretty bad but there was one tune i really liked, i can't remember which it was now, so i kept it in my car for a long time.

Is it just my imagination or does it look like a fan is reaching up to pick the nose of the guitar player?
Thanks for the links, Tia. Is there a full version of "Kashmir" available from them?
Have fun at the show.

so it was a lot of fun! the same person was responsible for the best thing and the worst thing about it. Steph Paynes, the guitar player, totally has the jimmy page pantomime DOWN. it's almost freaky.

it's really great, it's like watching method acting. there's a part where they all walk off stage to let the keyboard player do a little solo bit and she grabs a beer and walks off and she's actually WALKING like him, holding a BEER like him. it's, like, uncanny.
the problem -- she's actually not that good a guitarist. she did the rhythm stuff well but the solos were sorta fakey, she would play every other note and generally be sorta fumbly. i think she needs to go through slow scales, it helps with your articulation and hers isn't very good. i mean it was good enough, but i wanted to see some real in-depth jimmy-study, and that was not present.
i'm not gonna lie, they're largely easy on the eyes, those lez zeppeliners, particularly her and the singer, and yet i couldn't take my eyes off the diesel truck 18-wheeler of a drummer they have. i believe she may have actually been the reincarnation of john bonham. ;D huge ugly woman, but plays those bonham riffs like a thunder god. half the time her drum kit was being clutched by anxious roadies who were trying to keep the thing from flying apart.

oh, and red ant, they did kashmir. it was a particularly good rendition. the other thing i wanted to see was at least a couple mega-obscure songs -- something off the b-side of "presence", say, or one of the many overlooked great tunes from physical graffiti like "night flight." i've always loved that song. when you play a really obscure song that didn't get a lot of air play you speak to the true fans, but all the songs they did were the big hits like whole lotta love and kashmir. although... they DID open with all of led zeppelin I from beginning to end, which was a nice touch, cuz it means they played one of my all-time favorite tunes by zeppelin that largely gets overlooked and i don't know why, which is "your time is gonna come." great song, and they did a great version of it.
oh, and you're probably wondering... no stairway. i was wondering if they were gonna do it, the audience was real fired up so i'm sure it would have brought the house down but still, that's such a controversial tune. ;D also, no jimmy page doubleneck.

although whatsherface did a great job getting all the replica guitars exactly right. the sunburst les she plays seemed different from the one jimmy used to play as his main guitar, but nothing you'd notice. and she had a great replica of the -- i think it's a gretsch hollow-body? that he uses for "winter summer"

oo! and also this painted-up telecaster jimmy used to use way back in the very early days.

she kept having roadies out to swap out one guitar for another between songs but i thought it might have been fun to have em all out at once, it would be a fun game guessing which one she would pick to play next. her techs were busy, she was always swapping between all these different guitars and all these special tunings and whatnot.
anyway. i do ramble on about these things.

okay, just one more. because i'm postwhorin'. but if anyone ever wonders why jimmy is officially a guitar god, let this assuage all doubts.

ALSO!
there were lots of lesbians. somehow this surprised me, though pleasantly. :P given that led zeppelin was a huge 70s band i imagined the audience would look like an AARP convention, but me and my friend were surrounded by hot teenage lesbians making out. it was awful. 8)

that's a good one Tia. they're still fiery and brash here in this video! watching this vid pretty much confirms to me why so many other rock bands I've seen in concert always seem to pay homage & play a Jimmy Page riff , he's that damn good 8)

;D with a name like lez zeppelin, who would have thought it was gonna be a total dyke fest?
can we say dyke here? ??? I still have yet to see AC/D-She, a band that plays a lot in San Francisco & I wonder if there will be lots of lezzies makin out? my friends have seen them and say they kick ass, and are spot on AC/DC > (Bon Scott version)
