Subject: Late 70's / early 80's Lip Balm
Written By: Rob In Cleveland on 03/28/08 at 11:55 am
Okay, this may be a bit of a stretch as it may have only been a regional product, I don't honestly know because I was very young at the time, but in the late 70's / early 80's, (definitely pre-1985), my mom used to use a type of lip gloss or lip balm that came in a little gold metal tin with a top that slid open and closed. The tin was small, maybe roughly the size of an eraser, this kind:

I remember they were fruit-flavored and there were many varieties. I don't recall seeing them past '84-ish and for some reason they just popped into my head the other day and I can't for the life of me remember what they were called. Hoping someone a little older than me can help me out.
Thanks.

Here's a site that sells these - http://www.vintagesister.com/liplickers.html
Edited to add: Actually, here's an eBay auction for vintage ones. Maybe even the ones you owned..? ???

I totally remember those! I had one that was grape flavored..I used to love to slide it open and closed. It didn't look quite like the one pictured there, similiar..but not exact.
Edit: I looked at the vintage ones listed..those are more like the ones that I remember!

Those are both pretty darn close. It may even be the same product, but the packaging I'm remembering may have been an earlier version because I remember the metal tin was gold and the art on the top had way more of a 70s vibe to it. But, thanks for the help!

I used to have the Butterscotch flavor, I LOVED it. They were so gooey and sticky though that I remember when I wore them in 1986 and I would kiss my boyfriend goodbye (until lunch!) at my locker that we'd kinda stick together for a second or two. The stuff smelled so good and tasted pretty good too (as I recall), it was hard not licking it off my lips. I guess that's where the name came from huh? ;D

I can't tell you how many times, while at the mall with my gf, that I got dragged into Claire's Boutique. She had to load-up on bracelets and beads and stuff...

I remember Lip Lickers. I never had my own tin but I knew some girls that did. They said it was pretty sticky stuff.
