Subject: Clyde Frog/"About Safety"
Written By: AL-B Mk. III on 12/10/07 at 8:28 pm
Back in the 70's there was a puppet show called "About Safety" that was produced by Mississippi Public Television. The main character was named "Clyde Frog" and the show was, well, about safety. ;D It was on PBS and it usually came on during the day just before Sesame Street.
Clyde Frog (who was obviously a cheap knockoff of Kermit, but with a weird, high pitched voice) was a naive, mischievious sort who did a lot of dumb dangerous stuff which would inevitably come back to bite him.
One episode I remember was about what you should do in case of a tornado, and although Clyde actually had the good sense to get his ass indoors and take shelter, there was a character who was flying a news helicopter in a rather reckless manner, and he got too close to the tornado and wound up crashing. (It kinda weirded me out.)
Anyone else remember this? I've looked all over YouTube and have found nothing.

I remember that! I saw it when I was home sick from school one day. It kinda gave me the creeps too. Clyde Frog is also Cartman's stuffed animal on South Park. Thanks for the creepy memory!!

YES! Clyde Frog's Safety Rules. It was bad puppetry and odd choices for safety messages. There was the one where he was reaching for a book and ill-advisedly stood on the back of a chair, and then tumbled. There was a school bus one, too, and I remember the tornado one. Whether in one episode or as a theme song, they sang to the tune of the Notre Dame fight song, "Safetyy, safety is our song. We must practice alllllll day ong. On the school bus and at home. Safety wherever we go." The villainous guy ( who was flying the heli in the tornado, I'm sure) once uttered the phrase, "Don't try to trick me, Frog!" and my family still says it sometimes. The show is the vaguest of our memories, but it's still there like a dream.

I thought Clyde Frog was the chairman of the board of Mississippi Public Television. Actually, I though Mississippi Public Television might be an oxymoron...
:D

Yes! I remember Clyde the Safety Frog. I loved that show. In the begining of the show it always showed Clyde balancing on the top of the chair getting ready to fall off while reaching a book. So cute. I watched it on PBS in Kentucky. I haven't found it on here either, and have looked. I wanted to show it to my kids along w/ High Feather and The Polka Dot Door. Those are some other PBS favs. There was another one about a boy who transported himself to different places when he would put on silver gloves and get on an exercise type bike. Do you remember that one or what it was called? Anyways, just wanted to drop ya a line and tell ya your not crazy...It did exist!

I'm trying to find videos or something for Clyde Frog, but I'm getting "South Park" clips instead.
If anyone has some, please tell me.

"About Safety" featuring Clyde Frog originated in Mississippi and was syndicated throughout the USA... I was introduced to this show while being FORCED to watch "About Safety" at school one day as punishment (LOL), and it ended up being soooooo funny that my sisters and I would watch it at home during the summer/winter breaks on Channel 2 at 8:30am EVERY single morning, and even recorded some episodes on VHS tapes!! LOL!!
To the person that said they even remembered the theme song music - - me too, and I just finished singing it for my coworkers (we were having a discussion about old childhood shows, LOL) ... and the BEST episodes of Clyde Frog were the TORNADO, the school bus, the BIKE RACE (LOL) and I dare not forget the Halloween/Wicked Witch/Gingerbread House episode!!!! ;D ;D
I live in Jackson, MS and I always said I wanted to stop by the Mississippi PBS station here and see if they still have footage available to purchase, and if so, I will let those of you that are interested know what I come across.... Wow... Childhood memories!!! :\'( :)

I found it!
Sort of.
What I found is a montage of children's programs from Mississippi Public Broadcasting from the 1970s on, and at about 0:45 you can see him, no sound though. :P
