Subject: Favorite Tubes Song Of the 1970s

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 07/10/06 at 4:03 am

I know I'm not the only one who has at least heard of the Tubes.

They were quite infamous in the Bay Area/West Coast in the '70s.
The above poll shows some of their more famed hits in this decade.
Which is your fave, and why?

Tough choice but i had to go with "white punks on dope". I think it was the first Tubes song i heard so it it'll always stand out.

Decent choice.

You get good karma for that, grasshopper!

Thank you for showing a decent interest!
Feel free to also check out my companion threads (in the '80s, & in 2000, respectively.)

Nah hawk they were not that famous. Down is SD They got hardly no play. Being a veteran of both Cal jams and the US Festival.
There where quite a few of the local bands in CA then. Too bad the Tubes didn't get to play. It would have helped them in the late 70's. And early 80's.

I didn't say "famous". I said "infamous".

They got banned from a lot of places because of their onstage antics.
Most of the time, they'd have to post an obscenity bond before they'd be allowed to play.

For example, the legendary "Streaker's Ball"- in 'Frisco, that was one of the most legendary events STILL talked about, to this day!
I know this, because not only have I spoken to a few veterans who survived that event, but I have heard the tale straight from the horse's mouth! Fee Waybill & I have kept in touch over the course of 5 yrs.
He told me what it was like. Prairie Prince was also there, & has regaled me with similar events.

I chose Don't Touch Me There, It's real hard to choose a favorite. I am a
huge fan of 70,s Tubes. It's when they reached the 80's that I started to
move away from that style. It seemed to me that the Tubes sold out to
the MTV crowd. That's what I dislike.

It wasn't so much that the Tubes sold out- this is a common misconception.
The Tubes were a sneering parody of the system.
In the '80s, the rest of the world finally got the message.
This means that the Tubes BECAME the system they mocked so efficiently.

It's a tough choice, I know.

My own personal favorites are "Mondo Bondage", followed closely by "TV Is King".
