Subject: Best Mike Oldfield Song

"Family Man" gets my vote.  It is a song I remember, and still love today 8)

Also like "Moonlight Shadow" and the Christmas themed "In Dulce Jubilo"

I chose other, my favorites are:

Mount Teidi  (1982)

Ready Mix  (2001)

both songs feature Carl Palmer on drums, so it's kind of
obvious why they are my favorites.

Not a song, but it is the whole album of Tubular Bells that gets my vote.

Yes, 'Tubular Bells' here too...absolutely fascinating how that album was put together - literally with sticky tape and very good timing!

The 45 version was basically the first few minutes of side one, as used in The Exorcist...

'To France' was also a very good song...much played on the radio, but not a sizeable hit...

So what was on the flipside of the 'Tubular Bells' single?

If memory serves, it was a version of that old 'folky' classic, 'Froggy Went A-Courtin''

If so, that is a new Mike Oldfield track for me.

There was quite a few things he tucked away on 'B' sides in his early days...I suppose because he was primarily aimed at the album market, first and foremost...

Indeed, the single was only released when The Exorcist became popular...the album had been out quite a while beforehand...

I'm not sure whether there's a definitive collection of this early stuff, but I don't recall this track ('Frog') being on CD when I last looked...

I've only heard Tubular Bells, and I quite liked it. Probably like Track 1 better than Track 2, especially the glockenspiel bit.

"Tubular Bells" for its association with "The Exorcist."
Otherwise, I never cared much for Mike Oldfield.

His brother and sister (Terry and Sally Oldfield) both had successful musical careers too. The three of them still put out music, they're mostly released on new age music labels, such as New World Music*

Pleeeease, not to be confused with New World Records!
