Subject: Hairstyles of the 70s/90s
Written By: Trimac20 on 04/21/06 at 9:50 am
It is often said the 90s are most influenced by the 70s, and the 80s by the 60s (I would sort of disagree with the latter idiom), but I noticed there is a very strong correlation with hair-styles (particularly women) between the 70s and 90s where 'straight and long' were in. Whereas the bouffant styles of the Go-go girls/Beehive was popular in the 80s with the huge hair that was more chemical than natural. Crimping was also popular (shudder). There was also a trend for shorter hair for women (ironically, when long hair for men was still popular).

Crimping became popular in the 80s with a mild repeat in the 90s

The two biggest female hairstyles of the '70s were the long, curly, and luscious look and the straight and long look. By the end of the '70s, there was a definite move towards more Farrah Fawcett-ish, hairsprayed hair in the "long, curly, and luscious look"...also, short/medium length hair was popular.

The 'Pageboy' was more of a 60s thing, but did indeed persist into the 70s...
Long and straight was still probably the dominant style.

Don't forget the "fro"! Afros came back into the 90s with accessories, such as bandanas and the infamous pick.

The Afro was always cool, though apart from being a disco-thing, tended to be restricted to certain racial groups due to a natural tendancy to have very tightly curled hair. But a very big influence on the mainstream...
