Subject: "80s-like" 70's songs.

Written By: Marty McFly on 01/05/06 at 7:36 pm

I was just thinking about this right now. Even though the full extent of 80's music came in with Thriller and the explosion of MTV (late 1982), there's a number of 70's songs that still have a vague 80's sound. As a kid, I used to get some of them confused if I didn't know the date on 'em.

Of course some are from primarily 80's bands starting in the 70's, but anyway:

Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
Peace of Mind - Boston
Just What I Needed - The Cars
We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard
Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel
Heartbreaker - Pat Benatar
Jamie's Cryin - Van Halen
Don't Go Breakin' My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
Don't Do Me Like That - Tom Petty
One Way or Another - Blondie

Anyone think of any more - or thoughts in general? ;)

A Little Lovin' (Keeps the Doctor Away) - The Raes (A 1979 Disco hit that sounds more like early 80's disco)
Love Takes Time - Orleans (Sounds like early 80's AOR)

^ I'll have to listen to "Love Takes Time" - don't think I've heard it.

BTW, interestingly as I was writing the original post, I thought of their big upbeat hit "Still the One" - maybe it's just me, but I always thought that was like 80's pop with 60's styled vocals.

'Still the One' does have that 80's and 60's feel to it yes :)

That Rush song 'Closer to the Heart' was always very 80's to me.  It was a hit in '77 but for years, I always thought it to be 80's.  Technically it qualifies, since it re-charted on Billboard in 1981, but it's because of this that i was confused.  LOL

"Just What I Needed" - The Cars
"Video Killed the Radio Star" - The Buggles
"My Sharona" - The Knack
"Double Vision" - Foreigner
parts of the song "Life's Been Good" - Joe Walsh
"Heart of Glass" - Blondie

Ebony Eyes by Bob Welch definately reminds me of an 80's song. I dont know why. I think it was out in 1978.

A little tid-bit that I didnt know until recently: Bob Welch with Fleetwood Mac in the early 1970's and  when he left he was 'replaced' by Lindsey Buckingham, and HE brought the beautiful, and very talented Stevie Nicks with him.

Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, their song 'Dont Stop' from the Rumours Lp also reminds me of an 80's song.

Yes, Love takes time is a perfect example..
there is one with a really bad beat box rhythm in the beginning..
very 80s..
Fool if you think it's over by Chris Rea..I was just listening to it.  it sounds very electronic and fake, the drums.

I just realized something relevant to this topic about the Rolling Stones.

Various songs, such as "Miss You", "Beast of Burden" and "She's so Cold" -- which came out in the late 70's -- sound more 80's than their biggest hit of the real 80's, "Start Me Up."

Video Killed The Radio Star was released in 1979

Even though it charted in 1980, it's still a Seventies song.

I'm not sure but was "I'm so excited" by the Pointer Sisters late 70's.  I'm not sure, maybe it was early 80's.  Maybe you guys might know.

Actually, according to my Billboard book, it reached #40 nationally on December 15, 1979.

'83. But it does kinda sound Disco (just with tons of synthesizers). ;)

The one that came to my mind is "Baker St." by Gary Wright.

I'm So Excited was originally a top 30 hit in 1982.  A longer version of it re-charted in 1984 as a top 10 hit :)

A lot of Cheap Trick's songs, "Surrender" especially, have a kind of 80's sound to them IMO.
