Subject: Toy from the 70's (Do you remember the Big Trak?)

Written By: Tom on 12/22/05 at 12:48 pm

Does anyone remember the Big Trak?  It was an electronic "space tank" that you programmed to go where you wanted it too.  It was sold by Milton Bradley.  They also made a corvette that operated the same way.  I had one of the corvettes when I was a kid.  I would like information on what it was called or where I could find one.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't remember that one but it sounds fun. My favorites were

Duncan Yoyo's -I could "walk the dog" all day
Slinkys
Soccer Boppers
Jacks
Roller skates

The Big Trak is one of the coolest toys ever. I'm in the process of creating a site dedicated to it... www.thebigtrak.com

Check it out or e-mail me at info@thebigtrak.com

Yo-yos saw a resurgence around 1996...I had a couple of Duncans, including one called a 'Butterfly' (it was like two yo-yos joined into one), as well as one called the 'Pro-Yo', 'the brain, 'glo in the dark brain', the moose yo-yos. I too enjoyed doing all the tricks; walk the dog, rock the cradle, ghost train.etc. We even had a class yo-yo competition (that's how big they were)...ah, simple times.

Great choices.  Remember Click-Clacks?  I'm so glad my kids didn't have those -- must've driven my mother mad!  And what about those big thick-rubber bouncing things -- you sat on them and bounced around?  Hoppin' Poppies or Poppin' Hoppies or something like that?  A very random toy that provided hours of childhood distraction.

I used to try and get hold of my friends SpaceHopper as I didn't have one, but had clackers and constant bruised wrists.   ;D

I don't remember Big Trak, but there were so many cool things to play with back then.  One of my favorite toys was Rock'em-Sock'em Robots.  You'll remember them if you grew up back in the 70s.  Two robots in a plastic ring, you had your hands on two grips that you used to try to knock the block off of your opponent.  Kind of mindless, but pretty cool toy.

Does anyone remember the name of a riding toy from the 70's that you would sit in and spin big red wheels? The base was a yellow disk and the wheels had yellow swirls on it.

Had Click-Clacks and bruises that went along with them.  LOL!!

Also, another poster mention Hippity Hop but there was another one that had a horses head on it and it was called Hoppity Horse.

Click Clacks were banned in my area (Melbourne Fla), because they were actually dangerous weapons disguised as toys. The Sit'n Spin was a miniature version of the playgroung spinner. You would sit on the bottom and turn the top part, spinning you around.

Now, lets see if you remember these-
Clogs with ball bearings in the sole for skating. They now have sneakers with a wheel in the heel, called Heelies.

Bead sandels. Being the early 70's, Hippies were everywhere. They also hated wearing shoes, and "The Man" wouldn't let them in public establishments without shoes. These sandels were nothing more than beaded strings, worn sort of like sandels.

And the toy I wanted more than anything else, the electronic Robot from Lost In Space. It walked, it talked, and I believe it shot sparks. My Mom refused to spend that kind of money on a toy for me. 30 some odd years later, I'm still holding a grudge.

I remember Clackers!!!  I had purple metallic ones.   AWESOME!   I never killed anyone though.    But I was looking for Hopping Poppies and came across this site.   They were little mushroom thingies with a suction cup foot and you'd press them down (for some odd reason) and wait till they unsucked and flew into the air.    I think they were "men" of a board game or something, right?   Someone please let me know,   I'm dying!!

I Believe they were banned due to glasslike material that would chip off and fly into kids eyes. Several children had eye damage because of them , NICE!!!
And what about Super Elastic Bubble Plastic?? Nothing like getting high while inflating balloons!!! Don't inhale, Don't do it!!!
