It was also successfully 'covered' by the dreaded Sinitta in 1989...
Not a patch on the original, say I...

Sinitta's was a good attempt, but originals are always the best :)

Now what do I remember Sinitta for?
the 9 UK top 40 hits she had. LOL
Songs like "So Macho", "Toy Boy", "Cross My Broken Heart" and "Right Back Where We Started From", which was the only hit she had in America

Perhaps you are thinking of Boys (Summertime Love) by Sabrina?

I picked "The Girl In Me"... didn't know anyone else had heard of that one, and I had completely forgotten about it until I read this post. My friend and I made a dance routine for that one...wasn't more than half of the song instrumental?

Not always...sometimes the remake makes the song famous ('Respect', for one); "Can't Hurry Love" by Phil Collins was a good remake, and I liked "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Suede much betterr than BJ Thomas' version (I'm not saying original, tho' I think it is); "Blue Moon" by the, um, Marcels?, had all the original slow versions beat by a mile (in my opinion, of course, my Mother won't agree) don't care for Jackson Browne's remake of "Stay", liked the 4 Season's, and never heard the original, by I forget who.
The original "Stay" was Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs. :)

I chose Right Back Where We Started From...Its a classic.
As far as cover versions...Personally (and I know Im more than likely going to get a LOT of Beatles and John Lennon fans off side here) I liked Brian Ferry's version of Jealous Guy so much more than the original.

Ferry did that version with Roxy Music in 1981, and I liked it better than Lennon's version as well
