Subject: 70's drawing disk like dot to dot

Written By: ian shannon on 09/01/05 at 3:25 am

I would like to know the name of a drawing disc I had when I was a kid it was about 6" in diameter and you put a pin in the middle and rotated the disc round drawing in the squiggly lines in number order and when you finished you were left with a picture of a cartoon character. I had Tom & Jerry

Hellfire! I remember this, too...!

It wasn't Spirograph...and I don't think there was a pin involved...

The 'disc' used to sit in a circular frame, and all these 'squiggly lines' had a number...you would line up the arrow on the disc to the corresponding number on the outer frame, then 'draw' the appropriate 'squiggle'...

Clear as mud?

But as to what it was called...erf! That's gonna bug me now!

Are you sure it wasn't a form of Spirograph?

I'm pretty certain it wasn't, karen...

Spirograph does sound near, but that was only for drawing the weird and wonderful 'spirally' patterns (until your biro ran out!)

This other thing was a pre-designed 'template' for drawing a complete picture...

Something like that...

Every 'squiggle' was numbered - there was an arrow on the disc which you matched up to the 'squiggle's' number on the frame, then you 'traced' the appropriate 'squiggle', ad nauseum, 'til the picture was formed...

...making sense now?

I remember something similer, but it wasn't circular.  The stencils were a translucent green color and there were 3 positions, with triangular bumps across the top and circular notches on the bottom.  I remember a set of hotwheels stencils where you could draw cars.  The cutout lines were color coded so you knew which ones to draw in at each of the 3 positions.

The one with the red frame and greenish stencil inserts was Mattel's Picture Maker.  I loved that thing!
