Subject: Avocado Plants

Was my crowd the only ones that grew avocado plants in the 70's?
You took the pit and stuck three toothpicks in it and sat it in water...It usually got about 12 inches and then got two leaves, then you stuck it in dirt. If you were lucky it grew more.

We lived in L.A. in the 70's and my mom had an avado tree in a pot that she grew the same way! It never did anything until the day we had to move to Texas and it gave us its only avacado!

No -you were not alone. Although my family never did the avocado pit thing, practically all my friend's or their families did. There would be the pit in cup on everyone's kitchen sink back than. Cool memory !

Avocados are delicious!!
They thrive in my neck of the woods...in fact, my neighbor has a tree that's got a bunch of them growing on it right now! 8)

Thats right...Pits in water sitting above the sink! Lol!
I think I will give it a try for old time sake.
Up here in Seattle I will have to wait for them to go on sale!
I heard that once the root grew, to put it under the sink in the dark 'till it grew about 12 inches, then bring it back out, then when it gets those two leaves, cut it back to about 12 inches again...any suggestions? I always got just two leaves. Also I think one kind made more waxy leaves rather than the dull ones.
I remember this one hippie shop where the lady had so many avocado plants and trees (trees were not common here) she said they never once made fruit though.
