Subject: 1970s TV Game Shows

Written By: AH3RD on 07/13/05 at 1:32 pm

When I think of game shows in the 1970s which take me back, I think of Match Game 7X/PM, The Joker's Wild, TattleTales, The Hollywood Squares, Wheel Of Fortune (with Chuck and Susan), The $10/20,000 Pyramid, and The Price Is Right (including the version Dennis James emceed).

Which '70s game shows do you fancy?  8)

I used to watch game shows a lot when I was a kid in the 70's-80's. I saw the "Gong Show" episode of "Sanford & Son" on DVD and that hostess with the accent took me back as well. I also remember the brown-haired model (Anitra Ford) on "Price is Right". I remember "High Rollers", "Gambit", "Joker's Wild", and I also remember "Match Game '73" from my headstart days. I was a game show junkie - before game shows turned to junk, that is.

Glancing through those titles, I'm amazed at how slow some of 'em caught on in Britain...The Price Is Right, The Pyramid Game and Wheel Of Fortune didn't really hit our screens until the 80s...

However, we had Hollywood Squares in the 70s - renamed Celebrity Squares...

Another biggie, 3-2-1 - based on a European idea with prize clues so cryptic that even a person with several degrees in Psychology would have had trouble solving 'em...!!

As a kid I used to love watching game shows.  :)

Some of my favorites were...

Match Game
The $20,000 Pyramid
The Joker's Wild
Card Sharks

I like 'Let's Make a Deal', 'Password Plus' (started in '79, continued in the early 80's), and every version of the Pyramid ever made.  :)

Daytime tv should start airing more game shows like they did when I was growing up - they kind of faded out in the late 80's when talk shows became all the rage.  Oh well, at least we have GSN.

Concentration was my favorite...

and I remember

Richard Dawson's family feud
Bullseye
Tic Tac Dough
The $64,000 Question
Whiz Kids

I think I can remember there being one called "Go!" and one called "Dream House" but I never watched those...

I loved game shows. Concentration, To Tell the Truth.  There were so many on in the morning.  I miss them.  It was a great way to exercise the brain instead of the brainless talk shows on now.  The Gong Show....now that was a true American idol. ;D

I wasn't around then, but I have watched some of them on GSN. Here are the ones I've enjoyed:

Match Game PM
the original "Family Feud"
The Joker's Wild
The Price Is Right (which is still on today)

Subject: Re: 1970s TV Game Shows

All we have now is "Price is Right". Or, the lesser known 2 Stupid Dogs cartoon version "Let's Make a Right Price" with host Bill Baker.  ;D  ;D

Personally, I'd rather watch the old game shows over the phony talk show drivle that we have now.

I think I can remember there being one called "Go!" and one called "Dream House" but I never watched those...

"Go!" & "Dream House" were 80's gameshows, Odyssey, and they were good, but short-lIved. I think Bob Eubanks(host of Dream House) holds the record for having the most game shows shot out from under him (Trivia Trap, the new Card Sharks, etc...), I guess The Newlywed Game, successful as it was, turned people off especially to him!
The 80's hd theur share of cool game shows though. Win, Lose Or Draw looks very dated now, but Password Plus became Super Password, and we had Scrabble, Sale Of The Century, Blockbusters, Classic Concentration, and to this day my personal favorite, PRESS YOUR LUCK! Even cabe started gettiing in the act with MTV's Remote Control, Disney Channel's Contraption and Nickelodeon's Double Dare & Finders Keepers. NTM, the 80's heralded the revival of what I think remains the most popular game show ever, Jeopardy!
These days, the best Game shows on the air have to be the GSN Originals like Lingo & Russian Roulette. Your thoughts?

I enjoy watching the reruns of Millionaire and Win Ben Stein's Money.  Incidentally, a lot of the game shows listed here (such as Pyramid and Family Feud etc, had successful runs in the 70's and 80's)  :)

Match Game
Blockbusters
The Pyramid
Name that Tune
Face the Music
Treasure Hunt
Anything Goes
Tic Tac Dough
Joker's Wild

And several others which I'm sure I will think of after I hit the "post" button.

There is one that I remember (that I wish I didn't) called Neighbors. I believe it was hosted by Regis Philbin. It was basically 5 neighbors sitting around and gossiping for a half hour.  ::)  Needless to say, it didn't last too long-which we all can be grateful for.

I always preferred to hear "Joker, joker, joker" than "No whammies, no whammies."

What always got me on Family Feud, no matter how stupid the answer was, the family would ALWAYS say, "Good answer."  Example:
Richard: Name something you find in your refrigerator?
Contestant: Your dog.
Family: Good answer, good answer.

Interesting fact: "Joker's Wild" was hosted by Jack Barry and produced by himself and Dan Enright (Barry-Enright Productions).  In the late 50's they produced the game show "Twenty-One" (also with Barry hosting), which in 1959 was taken off the air amid a huge scandal when a former contestant revealed that the show was rigged. This scandal was the subject of the 1994 Robert Redford-directed movie "Quiz Show" (a film which I highly recommend).

They still show reruns of "Match Game" on the Game Show Network, and I still watch it occasionally. One of my childhood faves, even though most of the jokes flew right over my head. I heard that some of the panel members (Richard Dawson, Charles Nelson Reilly) used to drink quite heavily before they taped the show, and if you watch some of the reruns it's pretty obvious that CNR is pretty gassed a lot of the time. :DRichard Dawson was one of the greatest letches in the history of television. Who can forget how he would always walk down the line and make out with each and every one of the female contestants?

How about "Tattle Tales" with Bert Convy? I haven't seen this show in a long time, but if I remember right it was somewhat similar to "The Newlywed Game," except that they had celebrity husband-and-wife teams. I don't remember how risque the dialogue got (I imagine it got fairly racy from time to time since it was the 70's after all), but the one thing I do recall is how, after the host asked the husbands a question (and vice versa), the wives (who were offstage in another room) would pop up on these TV screens underneath their husbands and they'd be wearing these huge air traffic controller headphones.

I forget what network used to air the reruns of this show back in the 80's (USA Network?) but I remember seeing one episode where the celebrity panelist (that the comics had to try and make laugh) was none other than Frank Zappa. It was funny, because the comics (actually, Gallagher was the second one) were doing all they could to get Zappa to laugh, and FZ just sat there and glared at them with this "you're an idiot" scowl on his face, although Gallagher managed to get a slight smile out of him.

I highly suggest checking out YouTube or Dailymotion and entering "Hollywood Squares" or "osmond game show" (not the 2000's Pyramid revival) and searching from there.

Thanks to the launch of BUZZR, some of these shows have made a return, including Match Game with Gene Rayburn (still on GSN), Dawson Family Feud (although they're airing 1980 episodes currently, but close enough to the '70s), Beat the Clock (Kennedy version), Tattletales, Double Dare (NO, not the Nickelodeon version, but rather an early Alex Trebek-hosted show that I really enjoy if they stop airing the same ten episodes over and over), and even an occasional He Said, She Said from the late '60s/early '70s (a prelude to Tattletales).
