Does anyone understand how they got such a huge, loyal following that almost became its own religion?
They had some good music, but were they really THAT good?
Any insight would be appreciated, as this was a bit before my time...

My brother was a big fan when we were growing up, I liked a few of the songs but didn't fully get into them. You're right though, their fans were some of the most loyal and dedicated of any band :)

Now that I have a little bit of time to do a search ;) I have found this article which may explain a bit of the phenomenon of the deadhead cult.

I also found out that there is a video called (what else?) Deadheads for $17.75. http://www.notowitz.com/Deadheads.html
I hope this helps a bit.
