Subject: Cereal box prizes and mail in offers

Written By: Butterball on 02/12/05 at 9:29 pm

Anyone remember getting toys in the cereal boxes or maybe sending in a certain amount of box tops to get things. I don't see that very often any more. Couldn't wait to get that last box top to send in. :)

We loved those toys, although not that many are real memorable...

I remember getting a set of Yellow Submarine stickers.  This just after the movie was first aired on TV.  I have no idea what the cereal was, but those stickers ended up on everything.  ;D

I also remember getting a record off the cereal box.  It was the Jackson 5, "I Want You Back".  It got played a LOT before it died on us.  8)

Remember Wacky Wall Walkers.  They were a rubbery sticky octopus looking thing.  You threw them against the wall and they slowly crawled down it.  I got up in the middle of the night one time and stepped on one of those in the dark,  ewwwww!

When I had young kids I always wished they would put prizes in the cereal that was good for you.  The kids never cared what kind of cereal it was, they just picked it for the prizes.

I remember when cereal boxes had a lot of silly prizes in them. They sure don't do that as much as they used to these days.

I used to love whenever certain cereals would have a contest to win a shopping spree in a toy store....I always wished that I would win that...and in my mind I would imagine myself running up and down the isles....filling my cart with MANY toys! :D

Those prizes were fun.  I don't remember specific items though.  I loved sending in for stuff with box tops.  Doesn't matter what it was.  It was fun to get the package in the mail!

You can still do this -- but I hate when they require the sales receipt.  I have a collection of promotional watches that I got by sending boxtops in from cereal boxes.  (Random promotion:  if you have any such watches that you don't want...please let me know!)

OH YES.  I always thought that would be the BEST.  (Side note:  I worked a temp job for the sales staff of Parker Brother toys back in the 80s.  I was there for about six weeks.  At the end of the job, the office manager took me to the toy closet -- shelves upon shelves of games that the salespeople would take around for promotions.  She gave me a big shopping bag and said "Take anything you want.  Go for it."  What a blast!)

I also had the Hey Mister Sun (Bobby Sherman) 45 record.

I once sent in and received a Dawn doll and two dresses from a cereal box offer.

We were avid token collectors as kids.  I can recall having a watch from Hula Hoops, a U2 t-shirt (from Hula Hoops I think) and a Weetabix car.  I also used to like the freebies inside cereal packets in particular the Shrinkie Dinkies.

You can still get free stuff.  Currently we have a box of Cheerios with a free book in it.

I remember getting an orange plastic Wacky Racers bi-plane with Muttley as the pilot. It was one you had to save up for, and then send away for.

I also remember the records from the cereal box. I think I had the Archies, and maybe another.

Didn't they used to print stuff like Batman masks on the back of the box with cut-out lines?  You'd cut the mask out from the box...but then you ended up with a scrap of cardboard you couldn't really use for anything.

Yup and in the late 60's and early 70's they even put little cut out records on the back of some box's. My sister got her first Archie record that way Sugar Sugar.  :)

Seem to recall it was mainly Shreddies cereal boxes that had this on (in the UK at least)

I still have the baseball cards I cut off the back of Post cereals....

The favorite mail in was the frogmen and the submarine - you put baking soda (or powder ???)  in them and they "acted just like the real thing"...

Someone else mentioned it - it was just so exciting waiting for the mail to arrive...growing up in Milwaukee there was a bread company that had as an offer if you sent in the ends of the wrapping on the bread, you would get an autographed photo of one of the Milwaukee Braves.  I think it took like five wrappers to get the photo.  I got photos of some of the lesser known players on the team, none of the stars...
