I would say 1981 or 1982 but since that wasn't an option I voted 80.

When did the 70s end? When disco died off about the mid-80s. Or when bands like the New York Dolls/Clash/Pistols/Ramones began the punk movement and basically destroyed old school rock. Although I consider the true beginning of the '70s' with its disco culture.etc about 1974. 1970-74 were more like the late 60s in terms of music.etc.

Interesting question - I also voted for 1980 since that was the "oldest" option. I think the 70's -- just like any other decade -- had a few distinct eras.
1970 and a bit of '71 was like a holdover from the 60's. Hippie/counterculture era still around, but starting to lose steam.
A bit of '71, but definitely 1972-75 is what I call the "classic rock" 70's. This actually seemed like a pretty cool time - the feel of it was still a bit 60's-like, with alot of w@@d-smoking, partying and a generally "free" mentality (the Vietnam War was dying down. American involvement in 1972 - including soldiers being shipped off there - seemed far less than, say 1968). However, Nixon's presidency was 60's like.
1976-78 was the Disco era (and, for contrast, punk and the precursor to hair metal rock, such as KISS & Alice Cooper). Because of that, this part of the decade was inching closer to how the 80's would be, but not fully yet. Technology, such as VCR's were just beginning to be produced, but weren't really mainstream-ly available yet.
1979-82 was the "transitional" era to me. Disco was still around in '79, but starting to die. Video games started coming out around then. This was also the year synthesizers started being used in pop - so, based on stuff like that, I'd say '79 is the only 70's year that's fairly 80's-ish. True, MTV did go on the air in August '81, but since it didn't really explode until Thriller a couple years later, I still think there was some 70's culture up to '82, but by 1983, it was sraight on 80's.
So, in short, the "main" 70's was 1971-78, and the late 70's was 1979-82.

Although he did not survive to see much of the 70's Jimi Hendrix sets the starting point of the decade which probably ended with the slaughter of John Lennon.

True.
MTV really did the '70s in, but for me I would say the '70s ended around the time J.Geils Band went way too commercial with their "Freeze Frame" album in early '82.
Anything after Spring of '82 was the end of the '70s. MTV started to really kick in around Summer or Fall of that year and it made music before that seem really old and out of step.
(Funny how things change. A lot of that new, different and wonderful MTV stuff back then sounds like garbage or just plain silly today)
