Hey Laurel! I chose "Moonlight Feels Right" and "OtherS would've included:

Falling by LeBlanc & Carr-1978
How Long by Ace-1974...to name a few!

BTW, Gilbert O'Sullivan had 3 hits....including "Clair"  and "Get Down" both from 1973 and Looking Glass had a minor 2nd hit in 1973 called "Jimmy Loves Mary Ann"

Thanx for the info-I knew you'd straighten me out!  "How Long" is a great song!
What about "Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band-why do we all know this song?

Tanya,  I am and always will be a disco fan.  The first record I ever bought with my own $$ was Saturday Night Fever, and I still have the vinyl-2 record set.  One of my favorites is "Dim all The Lights"-Donna Summer.  My most despised is "I Love the Night Life" by Alicia Bridges.  Of course, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor must be given honors!

What would you have added?

There's a bunch of other great one hit wonders from the '70s. Some get mentioned all the time. How about one of these

Tighter, Tighter - Alive & Kicking
Montego Bay - Bobby Bloom
Driver's Seat - Sniff 'n' the Tears
Come and Get Your Love - Redbone

Some fine tunes there, but I went for...

Other - 'Spirit In The Sky' - Norman Greenbaum

...a true OHW in every sense...did he know any other songs bar this?!!

Also worth a mention (tho' I sense that our Australian friends may find this hard to believe...) is 'Howzat' by Sherbet...a cracker of a song (amongst many), but their only notable overseas hit...

'Resurrection Shuffle' - Ashton, Gardner & D-yke...great stuff...

Heh! Consider yourself responded, Karen...!!

I didn't throw that one in to spite you (I know you don't care for it much...), but it was one of the many tunes I was brought up on...

Okay, you can stop looking at me funny now...!!

A couple more...

'Float On' - The Floaters (who, er...floated off soon after, never to be heard of again...)

Les Crane's inspirational (!) 'Desiderata'...which, hand on heart, I've never heard played on the radio...!

And, John Denver will always be a OHW here...'Annie's Song' was the only effort of his that we bought...!!

often, and "Any Day Now" originally recorded by Chuck Jackson, I lovelovelove that version.

David Essex: Rock On
Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells

Patti Smith Group: Because The Night

Joe Jackson was a OHW ? Maybe just in the '70s, but I can think of a good popular '80s song by him.

Joe was no OHW!

Besides "Is She Really Going Out With Him," Jackson had singles hits Stateside with "Steppin' Out," and "Breaking Us In Two," and "You Can't Get What You Want."

Although "Steppin' Out" was his biggest hit, Top 10 US/UK,* "Is She Really Going Out With Him" has a longer lifespan, perhaps in part because it appeared on the Fast Times At Ridgemont High soundtrack.  "Pretty Boys" wasn't a charting single, but its inclusion on  the Times Square soundtrack garnered it some New Wave attention.  Plus the lyrics were quite prescient of his bitter experience with Duran Duran and the "pretty boy" New Romantics hogging all the MTV fame a few years later.

Jackson started out New Wave but he had an irresistable draw to the Cole Porter side of song writing, which left him with critical respect, but less chart action than he might have otherwise seen.

*"It's Different For Girls" actually scored a #5 single in the UK to "Steppin' Out" at #6, but the former didn't chart at all in the U.S.

Subject: Re: Best ONE HIT WONDER

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 10/30/05 at 3:38 pm

BTW, though Jackson's "Is She Realy Going Out With Him" hit the charts in the summer of 1979, I would still consider him primarily '80s, especially since his music was "New Wave" anticipation of the '80s.

What about The Raspberries - Please Go All the Way, would they be considered a one hit wonder

For me, the best one hit wonder would have to be 'Hello, This Is Joanie (The Telephone Answering Machine Song)' by Paul Evans.

Id also choose:

My Sharone by The Knack

Afternoon Delight by The Starland Vocal Band

Day Trip To Bangor (Im not really sure who sang this one. Its away in my collection atm)

Eleanor Rigby by Zoot

Hooked On A Feeling by Blue Swede

Hot Child In The City by Nick Gilder

Darlin' by Frankie Miller

Rock Your Baby by George McCrae

2-4-6-8 Motorway by The Tom Robinson Band

See My Baby Jive by Wizard

If I Had Words by Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley

Ernie, the fastest milkman in the west by Benny Hill

L.A. International Airport by Susan Raye

Born To Be Alive by Patrick Hernandez

Chuck E's In Love by Ricki Lee Jones

Some of these may not be accurately selected as one hit wonders, but from my memory I think they are, but I may be wrong, so if I am please correct me.

Thanks

Fiddlers's Dram sang Day Trip To Bangor, definitely a OHW

In the UK Benny Hill better known as a comedian did have other hits, including Gather Up Ye Mushrooms, Tom Robinson is better known for another song, and what can be said about Wizzard apart from the Christmas Number One I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday.

The Knack had 4 hits in total, three of which reached the top 40 (the other two were Good Girls Don't - 1979 and Baby Talks Dirty - 1980)

Blue Swede had another U.S. top 10 hit with a cover of The Association hit "Never My Love"

in Canada, Nick Gilder had another popular hit called "Here Comes the Night".  As well, he was originally a member of the band Sweeney Todd.  Their song "Roxy Roller" was one of the biggest hits in Canada in 1976

Frankie Miller had a modest hit in 1982 called "To Dream the Dream"

Tom Robinson had 5 UK top 40 hits from 1977-1983.  Apart from 2-4-6-8, his only other top 10 hit was 1983's "War Baby"

Ahhhh

Thanks for the correction!!!

My memory isnt what it used to be. the Knack's 'Good Girls Dont' I think I only know from the Chipmunk Punk album (so that shows my age).

Here in Australia many second singles of these people never made it big as most of them I dont know at all....Although, like I said, my memory isnt what it used to be.

Thanks again

That's a tough one, but I'd say yes.  They had two other hits, "I Wanna Be With You" and "Let's Pretend," but "Please Go Away" was by far their biggest hit.  The thing that really complicates it is that the lead singer/songwriter was Eric Carmen, who was a two hit wonder, with one each in the 70s and 80s.  I guess this is a matter of degrees, and I vote for yes.
