Subject: Why did NBC try to totally rid themselves of the Peacock?

Written By: Tony20fan4ever on 09/30/04 at 4:31 am

What was NBC thinking when they tried to totally get rid of their Peacock? I guess there was some kind of uproar that got them to create a new Peacock...? That red and blue 'N' was HORRID IMO. I have always liked the Peacock,,and always will.

Yeah, remember the "Proud as a Peacock" campaign?  Started in '79, I think.  I didn't know NBC was going to drop the peacock...

   Okay, let's try this again...

The old 11-feather version, superimposed over the 'N' graphic.  Also known as the proud 'N'.  Current NBC peacock, changed in 1986, has six feathers and the peacock's head is turned the right...

Don't ask me why I know this...I really need to get out more...

  Edited: added '1986'...

Watching NBS recently, it seems they've started using a single-color peacock rather than the multi-color one.

Well, as I recall, NBC used the peacock as a symbol because they were the first network to broadcast in color.

Later on, the term "in living color" was used to describe color shows, hence the name of that TV show decades later.  I don't know which network started that term.

I also remember that before Bewitched came on, the woman who played Samantha would do a short "tease' promo, and I loved the way she would say, "In Color" with that slight accent of hers, which sounded a bit like a New England accent.

Later on, the peacock was ridiculed on spoof shows, usually an imposter in a costume was mocked.

I personally think that the peacock became a symbol for pride rather than color, since everyone had color by then.  And then they shifted promo campaigns and let it drop.

Here is a good article on the history of the NBC logos.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC_logos

The first one I remember is the "Snake" logo.  This was the most commonly used logo in the 1960's and 1970's.  The Peacock was ussed on occasion, but all news shows, promos, and station signs used the snake design.

In 1976, they came out with a new one, that that is the infamous "N" logo.  This came out with red and blue shapes on a white background.  This was largely done because that was the year of the bicentennial, and everything that year was red, white & blue.

In 1979 they finally got smart, and brought back the peacock.  This time it was much simpler, and placed over the N design.  This lasted until 1986 when the N was dropped and the peacock returned.
