Subject: A Few From 1971!
Written By: RockandRollFan on 06/25/04 at 11:22 am
TODAY I chose Timothy...aka "The Cannibal Song" ???
Timothy
The Buoys
Trapped in a mine WHAT had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
WAS Joe and me
Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?
Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink TO DRINK for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll TAKE a swig
And then there's some for you."
Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you :o
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?
I must have blacked out just 'round then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy :P
Timothy...

Had to go with "It's Too Late" by Carole King. That song does bring back memories. I also like Timothy, Wild World and I really didn't like Riders on the Storm when it first came out but it grew on me. Now I really like it.

Tough choice from that list, Mark...
I went for 'Sweet City Woman', just because it's so dam' catchy...
Although they're not on this list, mention must be made of three songs from that year which proved, beyond all doubt, that soul music had come of age...
'What's Going On' - Marvin Gaye
'Family Affair' - Sly & The Family Stone
'Just My Imagination' - Temptations
...great songs all...

Many good ones to choose from.
I went with
It's Too Late" - Carole King :)
Timothy.
Why do people call that "The Cannibal Song". I've always heard Timothy was a mule. ???
;D

That's what The Buoys claimed that Timothy was a mule. But we know better. ;D

Good golly what a question! I have a very soft spot for the music of '71 because it was the first year I seriously listened to music (at 11) ::)
I chose "Wild World" but could've picked so many. I was THIS CLOSE to picking "Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted" because I LOVED that song then! A sentimental favorite. But today, it's "Wild World".
Here's just a few other good ones that people may have forgotten:
"Love Her Madly" - Doors
"Beginnings" - Chicago
"Wild Night" - Van Morrison
"Get It On" - Chase
"What Is Life" - George Harrison
BTW "Layla" was originally released in '71 but hit the top 40 in '72... ;)
"Have You Ever Seen The Rain" - CCR

I picked Its Too Late, because I still remember my sister and I singing Carole King songs in the car constantly and driving my mom and dad nuts!!! :D

RnRFan and Indy,
Am I joking? No. There's nothing in the song that doesn't point to Timothy being a mule (or a dog for that matter). Joe and the narrator talk, but Tim doesn't say anything. ::)

I found THIS....which doesn't prove me and Indy correct yet
The Buoys, “Timothy†: This ultra-catchy 1971 pop hit sounds totally innocuous, until it dawns on the listener that it’s about cannibalism.

YES! from the mouth of the writer...followed by the link....sorry zcrito but I always just thought it was about this.... ???
I had seen the movie Suddenly Last Summer about a week earlier on TV, and it had a revelation about cannibalism in it, and I thought, If it's good enough for Tennessee Williams, it's good enough for The Buoys. So I thought, Cannibalism during a mining disaster, that'll get banned. It's not like I'm really telling people to go out and eat someone, this is just this dark, horrible thing that happened in this story. So I write this lyric: 'Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?' It's about three boys who are trapped in a mine with water but no food for maybe a week. When they're pulled free, they don't remember what happened, but they know they're not hungry. One of them is missing, and that's Timothy. We record this on the weekend and I don't think about it again."

The Doors: Riders on the Storm
I'm not that big on Jim Morrison, but "Riders" is a really cool song!

Good list AmericanGirl, I went with Lobo and Carole King. Love Van Morrison too!  1971 was a good year.
I'll always have a bad memory of Hotel California now since I took a cab-ride recently which was hijacked by a homeless man who sang the worst version of "Hotel" that I'd ever heard. Just can't get his awful singing out of my head.  :P ÂÂ

As a result of "Fahrenheit 9/11", it seems lately the most asked about song from 1971 has been "I`d Love To Change The World" by Ten Years After. ::)
??? :)

There are no real favourites for me on this list, but I ended up going with 'It's Too Late'.
However, one of my all time faves is from '71, 'Falling In Love Again' by Ted Mulry. A beautiful song IMO.

Had to go with The Partridge Family "Doesn't somebody want to be wanted"
I'm a huge Partridge fan. I love David Cassidy. I was thrilled when they did the Partridge movies a few years back. If I saw him today I would still scream "like a little girl"

I don't know most of these, but of the ones listed, I'll pick "It's Too Late"--I know that one the best.
