Subject: Best TV Phrases from the 70's
Written By: eightiesfan on 05/20/04 at 7:45 am
Sanford & Son had a couple good ones, like Fred saying "You Big Dummy" to Lamont and Aunt Esther saying "Watch it sucka" to anyone who insulted her, usually Fred.
Another good one is Archie saying to Edith "Will you stifle yourself?" on All in the Family.

Don't forget Fred Sanford when he would hold his hand on his chest and say:
"Weezy, I'm coming to join you! it's the big one!"

Actually, Weezy was from the Jeffersons. I believe Fred Sanford would say "Elizabeth"
Anyway, I had a Welcome back Kotter lunchbox with all their great phrases like "up your nose with a rubber hose", which I said a bunch.

Jimmie Walker (J.J.) and
Dy-no-mite!
"Good Times". Funny show in the '70s -- at least when Jimmie Walker and John Amos were on.

I don't know, Book 'em Dano! from Hawaii 5-0. Is that a '60s TV phrase or both decades?
What say you people?

Another funny thing Archie Bunker used to say was when Mike would put his feet up on the coffee table, Archie would say, "Dogs off the table."

Happy Days: Sit on it, Potsie!
Mel's Diner: Kiss my grits! and When pigs fly!
Alka Seltzer commercials (I think these were 70s) I can't believe I ate the whole thing!
(I may have the quote slightly wrong, but my folks and I have been saying it this way, for years) Harlem Globe Trotters: Another boring day on the boring little island of Piggie Piggie.

I think it's funny whenever Archie Bunker says "terlet" instead of "toilet." Example: "Hey, Edit', we're all outta terlet paper!" ;D
Also, I forget which character used to say this, but one (maybe all) of the Sweathogs on "Welcome Back Kotter" would always say, "Up your nose with a rubber hose!"

Margarine Commercials: "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!" (crash of thunder follows)
                 "If you think it's butter (but it's not) -- it's Chiffon!"ÂÂ
(This of course paved the way for countless snot jokes told during recess)
Ta, ta-ta-DAH! (trumpet fanfare accompanying appearance of crown on margarine eater's head)

Youse guys already said all the ones I was thinking of. I'll have to wrack my brain!
I have a love-hate sentiment toward All In The Family. Mostly love, mind you. It and Sanford & Son are my two favorite '70s sit-coms.
What made "All in the Family" work was that Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton were FUNNY.
Rob Reiner worked well as "Meathead," a foil for Archie. The repartee between Archie and the other characters makes the show timeless. The difference between the left and the right exhibited by Archie and Meathead is philosophically alive today, though the issues have changed. I can't tell you the number of times Archie has uncannily reminded me of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, or Michael Savage!
Where the show goes all wrong for me is when it focuses on Mike and Gloria's marital problems, when it makes one of Normal Lear's mawkish '70s liberal statements. Sometimes they strained to pull these *serious* issues into a half-hour sit-com, and it always bombed when they did. Maybe the Gloria Bunker-Stivic character worked in the '70s when the so-called "women's liberation" movement was trying to redefine feminity away from the '50s restraint and modesty. Today, though, the character is just obnoxious, and I reach for the clicker when I know one of her crying jags is coming up!
I find myself sympathizing with Archie when the women get all gushy and sentimental, "Aww, jeez, don't do dat!"
